In the service manual it says to use "straight mineral oil SAE 90" I'm not sure what that is and didnt see it at the TSC.

Does anyone have a recomendation on both the above and the type of motor oil to use in a 2n?

thanks again

I use the hydraulic fluid recommended in my 8N manual which is mild E.P. GEAR OIL per M-4864-A & B. Lot"s of stuff works including at least one guy who says he"s been using 30-weight motor oil for decades.
The summer engine oil should be S.A.E. 30 and thinner in the winter. Worn engines might want 40 or even 50. Detergent motor oil. Well, if you have an old engine (figured for frequent rebuilds so deposits are manual removed) that does not have an oil filter you do not want detergent oil that keeps the contaminates and abrasive material in suspension so it gets in the bearings and seals. If you have an engine with a 100% oil filter (modern engines not so frequently rebuilt) then you do want the material in suspension so it"s carried to the filter and removed and detergent is the way to go. Your N engine has a filter but it"s not a 100% filter. I understand it"s a 15% filter. Detergent motor oil will suspend material and probable be more abrasive than non-detergent oil that does not suspend material because the N does not have a 100% filter. Complicated issue, huh?
It"s your tractor so you can and will use what you want.

Ditto what Bob said.

At TSC they sell an oil marked " ford ford transmission and Hyd's 1939-1952"

That's like Bob mentioned.. it's a low gl-oil.. like 1-3.. 90wt.

Napa sells a gl-1 oil as part number 65-205.
Wallmart sells a gl-1 oil in many parts of the country as well.

Today's 90- weight GL-1 gear oil is the closest oil you're likel to find to the original.

Straight 30 or 40 weight engine oil is good in warm weather, and many people successfully use 15-40.

On a tractor that has not been used for a long time, or one that never say modern detergent oil, the use of detergent oil will loosen lots of sludge and debris, and the oil will get dirty quickly, and in the worst case, even plug the oil screen, so watch the oil, and if it's rapidly getting dirty, change it. After several oil changes with only low hours in between, the engine will start to clean up, and the oil will stay clean longer.
