I had a complete overhaul on my 8N about 6 months ago. Now it's smoking and oil is running out where the tail pipe bolts to the manifold. I've pulled the pistons and the rings are fine. No slots line up. There is a small exaust leak at Number 4 and some oil leaks out there too. Can anyone suggest where my problem may be??

On a newly rebuilt engine the # 1 cause of ring frailer is the end gap wuz not set correct. To tight and they will wear out fast. Cuz I Kin not see’em its hard to tell’ya what the problem is. If you mic’em and find that there is a big difference in the thicknees of the face to the inside of the ring on one side that will tell ya that either dirt wuz git’n in the chamber or the ring gap wuz to tight. When this is the cause you kin see the wear in the ring. Install one of yer rings in the cylinder and check end gap and let us know what it is. Kin not say I have seen a bad set of rings although I have blamed them but always had to redo the job again to find rings were not the problem. On cars and trucks its been valve seals or guides. This may be were you need to look I would remove the valves and guides and take a look. You need seals on the intake guides and check guide for wear. Have someone who works on engines look at yer rings for a opinion . You did not say iffin the sleeves and pistons were replaces.

If you've already pulled the pistons, it's best to replace the rings and lightly hone the sleeves in a cross-hatch pattern to break the glaze before putting the pistons back in so the rings seat. Check the piston ring gaps to be sure the rings are matched to the bore size.

Worrying about the ring gaps lining up and causing oil consumption is an old wives tale. Put the pistons in with the gaps staggered, and they'll rotate to different positions over time, Some will be lined up and some won't, with little, if any effect on oil use.

One, you need to fix the exhaust leak before it damages the block by cutting a grove.
Two, loosen the pipe clamp, hold up on the clamp to push it high on the manifold and re-tighten. That will pull the pipe up hard against the manifold.
Three, before you go farther with engine, adjust the carb main jet and hope. Turn it in all the way and then back out 1-turn. Get up in the seat, put it in 4th gear, get it rolling a bit then goose the throttle to 1/2 while you apply the brake to load the engine. If the engine hesitates or stumbles turn the main out 1/4-turn. Repeat until you get a smooth take up. You get that done and there is a puff of smoke when you goose the throttle then turn the main back in 1/8-turn and you should be set. Little luck, that will cure your problem. doesn"t cost anything to try.

Is it really pumping oil out? or is it an oily sludge?

It"s flowing down the side of the exaust pipe and puddlin on the ground.....real runny. After a few min. there is a puddle the size of a quarter.

I'd pull the manifold and try to find the leak.. a guess would be at an exhaust port from valve. I know the studs go into the water jacket.. so that shouldn't be an issue.

While you have the exhaust pulled, take a look at the exhaust leak as well.
