I just got around to my first oil change since buying my tractor a few weeks ago. Yes, I am in pamper city here. The oil was in need of changing and the filter is very confusing. Is this an ORIGINAL OIL FILTER? It sure does look like it to me - but of course I don't know any better. check out the picture. Also, I read in the I&T manual that the drain plug should have a screen on it and the one I took off does not. How important is this screen on the plug and do I need to replace it or the whole plug or nothing? I replaced the oil with HD SAE30WT name-brand oil and new Napa 1010 Gold Filter. Is this suitable oil/filter for my warm summer weather? I am in LA - lowest temps we get are around 20-25 degrees F in winter - mostly around 30-40F. Maybe I will switch to a multiweight oil in the winter.

Look at the pics - the numbers on the filter should be visable on the pics -- pretty cool looking in any case! Also check out my new knobs and proofmeter decal! It is coming along nicely!

That is a pretty old filter - how did it end up in a tractor so new looking? I saw one of those on EBAY once, still in box! It brought $50.00.

By the way, I use a FRAM C3 filter. Similar looking but no orange paint and a rubber gasket on the top.

No..... I don't know of any at this time. I just remember you saying your wife was curious if you ever were going to use the tractor for any work(or something to that effect). My wife thought that was pretty funny. I just don't understand females! :)

take a look at figure FO24 after paragraph 21 in the I T manual

the oil pump pickup rests on the screen

running without the screen invites vibration in the pickup and eventual seperation which cannot be good

at twenty bucks for a plug with a screen I wouldn't run without it---but

your mileage may vary

The screen is in the shape of a cylinder and serves to filter out large particles in the oil. The oil return pipe discharges into this screen cylinder. Then, when you open the plug, the large trapped particles are removed.

First, I would like to say...Real nice looking tractor. I do not know what an original Oil Filter is, unless you are talking about the one furnished with the tractor when it was sold new. This one appears to have been made by Fram for Ford. The filter you purchased, (NAPA 1010) is a good replacement filter. As far as the screen is concerned, I would buy a new plug (They come with the screen) especially since HD oil may break off sludge crud that may be there if the tractor was run with non detergent oil for long periods of time. If you know that the pan is clean and does not have accumulation of crud then the screen is not that important.
Happy Motoring
