If the tractor runs without the switch being on.. ya got a wireing problem.

If it's still 6v.. you've got a hot wire running to the coil somewhere instead of the switched wire.

If it's a 12v conversion, as another psoter said.. your line to excite the alternator may be providing ignition current due to no marker lamp or diode in line with the P1 or simply 1 terminal.

Skip,

Are you running a 12 volt conversion? If so they will run on after the key is turned off if there is not a diode or some type of resistive load(like a marker lamp) in the circuit from the alternator.

If you have a standard 6 volt system I would be willing to bet it is wired wrong. Let me know if it is 6 volt and I will dig up a good wiring diagram if someone else does not beat me to it.

Polarizing is no harder than falling out of bed.

Go to the voltage regulator with a screwdriver and momentarily short the BAT to the ARM/GEN terminal. They should be right next to one another. You see a spark and you are done. That"s it, no harder than that and takes just about that long.

I don"t know if you have a side-mount or front-mount but you have the FO-4 and should be able to follow the wiring diagrams to confirm your tractor is properly wired. But anyway, it seems your coil wire is getting juice from somewhere other then through the ignition switch. Unless you put a bad switch on there. You can check that by removing the ignition switch wire from the terminal block while she"s running. The engine should die just like you removed the coil wire.

I"d almost bet your tractor is not wired correctly but I just don"t know.
