I have looked through the archives and tried all of the suggestions that applied to my tractor. I have a 1951 8N SN 345688 I was not getting any charge so I had my generator fixed and put it back in. It had a broken wire internally. I polarized it just as the book says as well as the regulater (positive ground). It does not seem to be putting out any voltage. When I hook up my volt meter I get no reading, and the ampmeter is reading negative. The guy that rebuilt it is a electric motor mech. and has a good reputation. He said he tested it in his shop and said the output was good. I assume I should be able to get a voltage reading right out of the generator without going through the regulator, but I'm not getting anything.

I'm stumped!

SouNdguy is on to it. The FO-4 has simple jumper tests to determine if the genny is working or the problem is the voltage regulator.
My genny/starter/alt shop guy always tells me to bring both the genny and regulator in when I need a test and he does it while I wait for free. He hooks them both up and tests them together. And he never fails to tell me to make sure they have a good common ground and I say "I know and they have a ground wire running between them" and he grunts and that"s it.

If you don't have the regulator hooked up to the generator.. then you didn't polarize it correctly.

Hook up the wires, then jumper batt and arm. test for charge.

If no charge, take a jumper wire and jumper field tab on the genny to ground.. you should have MAX charge now.
