A Ford tractor has been given to me... The dash board is like the 2n, it has a 3 speed trans, the draft control is attached to the trans, not the fender. I has running boards. The wheels are like an 8N with the small bolt pattern. What I can see from the ser. number, I believe it is a 1944. It has the tubular radius rods for the front end. Do I just have a tractor that has been assembled from two different beasts, or did the later 2N's have the 8N wheels???

Dave..... ..the 3-speed tranny DEFINATELY make yer hybrid a 9N/2N.

And while the original 2N's had 5-bolt widehub frontwheels, the hubs are interchangeable for the 6-bolt narrowhub 8N frontwheels.

Now the rearwheels are slightly more work. The original 9N/2N rearwheels had 17" brakes and 6-bolt widehubs. The 8N's have 10" brakes and 8-bolt narrow hubs with a BIG AXLE NUT. The 9N/2N differential is the same as the 8N's. To change yer 2N's rearwheels requires changing the rearaxle TRUMPETS, rearaxle shaft, brakedrums and gutts. NOT EAZY. Don't mistake the 2N's axle rivets for the 8N's lugnuts..... ....Dell

Are you sure you don"t have a Massey Ferguson? They looked very similar to the 8N except for the horizontal grill lines and Continental engine.

Don't confuse the small circle of rivets on the 9N and 2N with the small bolt circle on the hub of the 8N. Everything you describe sounds like a post-1944 2N. None of the N's had a lift control on the fender. The jubilee nor the NAA did either for that matter that I know of. The 9N and 2N did not come with running boards, but a vast majority have had some homemade version mounted on them sometime in the past. Jot down the serial number and maybe snap a couple pictures for us and we'll get you straightened out.

Thanks for the reply. According to the Smith 8N site, these wheels are definitely 8N. that site has ID stuff for the N's. I'll post some pics when I get back there to look at it again...

yep.. diffy and back could be 8n.. or fergy.. does the hyd top cover have a draft control on it? if so.. 8n rear end.

front hubs could have been changed from 9n to 8n.. or again.. could be a fergy tractor.. they had a narrow front hub.

I've seen a few of the 8N/9N hybrids like it sounds like you have. Apparently the 8N differential will bolt up to a 9N or 2N front. I'm guessing that it has the 8N brake arrangement with both pedals on the right too. I've seen 9N differentials on 8Ns too. Lotsa mixin' and matchin' done over 50 or 60 years. If it was put together with good parts it should still work just fine for years to come.
Later, Lee
