Now this is just plain silly, I know. I backed her down the driveway to park her on a slope so I could powerwash her and all the gook would run down the drive. No parking brake. I figured it out, don't worry....

I heard an ugly rumour about three drain plugs for the oil? Also been looking at this C3P oil filter which don't look ANYTHING like the ones I used to screw onto Dad's car when I was a teen. I also read a post a while back about priming the oil pump but don't know if that applies here.

Is there any special procedures for changing the oil and filter on a 2N? Fishing for tips again, I hope thar bitin'.

Also, I know there has been debate on this, but I use the screen that fits in the oil pan as well over the drain cap. Many times this part is missing on these ol tractors. I have been a thinkin" that when I look at the pic, this had to be there for a good reason in Fords mind. It is part # 9N6730. It is listed the same for all, just a cylinder type screen that fits up in there.

The screen on the drain plug is a "filter" mesh that is supposed to help keep sludge and assorted trash out of the oil pump and/or pickup tube. If that tube gets clogged with a chip or chunk of sludge and your oil pump goes dry, there goes about $600 for an engine overhaul. Although it isn't a "go out and get one right now" sorta part, i would pick one up on your next parts run and install it when you get around to it.

Jeb,
Ya know that screen thing on the drain plug fits up inside that upside down tin can oil pickup?
Doesn't look to me like it goes all the way up. Mine was missin the first time I changed oil so I got a new plug. Found the old screen two years later when I dropped the oil pan!!

YOu got a couple different things running around. First, the "3 drain plugs" is referring to the transmission/rear end/hydraulic fluid oil. Secondly, the Fram C3P filter is an element that goes into the oil filter cannister on the left side of your engine block. Take the bolt off the top, yank the old one out, drop the new one in, it's that simple. The only time you need to prime the oil pump is if you crank it and don't see any oil pressure. If your guage is showing pressure, no need to prime it. Priming is generally reserved for tractors that have sat for a long time or are fresh out of an overhaul and are being started for the first time, that sort of thing.

6N Short,

When you replace the oil filter there is usually some sludge/junk in the bottom of the oil filter housing that you should really get out of there. There is a plug you can remove and drain the old oil out and then wipe the inside out with rags so it nice and clean. Then put the new filter cartridge in. There is a rubber seal that comes with some brands of filters that goes in the groove on the top cover of the filter housing. If the one that is in there looks good some guys do not replace them. Just keep the new one where you can find it in case you ever have one that leaks. One thing you do not want to do is put a second seal on top of the one that is already in there. If you are going to put the new one in make sure you get the old one out.

Good luck this weekend on your adventures. I am judging at a dog show in Cincinnati this weekend so I will not be able to get any time to work on my '41 9N. The show season is fast approaching and we still have lots to do.
