oil pressure at hot idle question

My oil pressure at cold start is 60 to 80. Bushhoggin at 3/4 throttle after 1 hour it's between 20 and 30. But now just recently, at idle only when hot, oil pressure is 5 or lower. What would cause this? Thanks Rick T.
P.S. it's a 49' 8N.

Hey guys, Im new at running an 8n and was wondering if my oil pressure was ok. Its 40 to 45# cold at half trottle and 25# hot at half trottle. Is this ok? And Dale said DO NOT USE 10w-30 year around why is that? Thats what I"m running in it now. Thanks Jim.

Interesting topic which raised some questions, so I did a little research and came up with the link below.
The interesting thing I read was that pressure does not equal flow. i.e. low viscosity oil flows easier and indicates lower oil pressure, but more oil flows through the oil galleries, which, in my mind, is a very good thing. The section on multigrade oil tells me that while you may get higher pressure initially with straight weigh oil at cold (startup) temps, multigrade provides better flow (lubrication) at startup and the same protection at hot temps. "SAE 30 is SAE 30 no matter what the "W" prefix number is: 0W, 5W or 10W."

Rattsie..... ...yer oil pressure is supposed to be spring limited at about 35-40psi cold or hot. Some shadetree mechanics, in a miss-taken notion of improveing hot operating oil pressure, "stretch" the oilpressure relief spring. Well guess what? The stretch works extreamly well at cold oil pressure, but when the oil heats up, its pressure is limited by the nature of the oil weight. (30wt will be lower pressure than 40wt, understand?) This is the natural nature of oil viscosity. And guess what? 5psi oilpressure hot idle is normal for HOT lightweight oil. Again part of the natural results of temperatur on oil viscosity.

Remember; oil pressure is a result of oil viscosity; temperature; pump capacity; (faster the pump turns, more capacity) and most importantly, bearing clearances. (loose clearances, low pressure)

Obviously it bothers you and so you were smart enuff to ask. Me? I'd change to a heavier oil weight. I use 20-50wt Valvoline; it act like lightweight 20wt oil when cold and heavy 50wt when hot. Use whatever makes sense to you. Straight 50wt would work in the summertime but you'd want straight 30wt or 10-30wt for wintertime.

Unlike modern automobiles, DO NOT USE 10-30wt year round in yer N-Tractor. Understand? ..... ...respectfully, Dell, the oily slicker

Uncommon to be that high in my opinion. Haven't seen or heard of many like that. Mine is around 30-35 cold and at hot idle is around 5. I know a bunch like mine.

60 0R 80! You got gear oil in there or what? You have a 75psi pressure difference tween hot and cold. That"s might be some kind of record.

Thought I would chime in on this one. I ran 30# oil, 25 at half throttle, but only 5 at idle. Put in 40# and I can get 35-40 at half throttle, and about 15 at idle. I was worried too at first, but it seems like most of us run 'em like that here.
