do I need to prime the oil pump on my 8N

As stated in earlier posts, I am now trying to get my dad's old 8N running after it sat for 10 to 12 years. We got it to turn over today with the spark plugs out, but we did not get any oil pressure. Took out the filter and tried again and found no oil being pumped into the filter. We filled the filter canister with 10W and were going to let it sit over night thinking that maybe all the oil drained out of the pump. Any ideas? Do I need to drop the pan and take the pump apart or will my idea work. I would hate to turn it over too much with out oil.

Yes, this is a prime example of when to prime the pump (no pun intended!). Just remove the big hex cap bolt above the crankshaft pulley and use one of those hand squeezed oil bottle thingies to reach in there and pump several turns of oil into that hole. Put the oil in after you remove the spring and the plunger that hides in there. Yes, the plunger is supposed to have that flat spot on it. If you get a spring out, but no little plunger, reach in there and try to get it out or the oil isn't going to go down to the pump.

Jeb:

Will the pump be primed by taking the filter cap off & filling the filter case with oil? May be a dumb question, but looks like the position of the filter case would gravity feed to the pump.

No it won't prime from the oil filter. What goes over to the governor just dribbles back in the sump. What could go back therough the line to the rear corner of the block would run out of the pump much faster than the line could supply oil. The relief valve cap is 15/16ths inch hex, just to the left of a front mount distributor coil and slightly below and to the right of the water pump. Suggest using 90 weight oil, quickly replacing the cap and cranking the engine before the pump loses prime again.

Russ:

Thanks for the quick response, I read the fill the oil filter idea somewhere else, it sounded logical, but I wanted to be sure before I start mine after 20+ years.

Thanks for the details. At least the thought process was correct. I am also thinking of filling the engine block as full as possible with 10W and letting it sit for awhile. This hopefully will allow oil to soak into other dry spots that need lubrication. May even turn it over a little to get the oil moving.
