I have a nice looking Jubilee along with other N's of varying degrees of condition and such.
Now, with all the rain California stole from all the rest of you this year and the timing of the storms, my weeds got so tall that I broke down and bought me a new 5 foot bushhog. About the time I went to get it, the lift on the Jube stopped working so I ran it quick down the road to the BUSY shop. Couldn't get it back for nothing. Now, I know from reading here that a 5 footer IS too big for the 9N but I got desperate to get some work done so I hooked that beast to my old tired 9N (which BTW is my very first tractor) just to get the feel of it. I'm telling straight. THAT LITTLE TRACTOR IS TOUGH!!. I ran it for 2 days over weeds that were taller than the hood in some places and it just grunted, dug deeper, and KEPT GOING!! I was so proud of the old gal, I took the for sale sign off it and threw it in the trash.

My 8n cuts decently with a 5' mower. i'd think that in general.. an average condition N will tote a 5' fine.. if it's tired.. that just means 1st gear and full throttle.. etc.

Hummmm..... Never seen anyone that has one say a 9N wouldn't handle a 5' bush hog. I know my 2N does just fine with the 6' finish mower or the 5' bush hog in 2nd gear at full throttle.

I agree with Rob. I've had a 5' for 4 years now and wish I had a 6'. If it got too tall I'd just cut 4 or 5' at a pass. Or raise it and make 2 passes. My 8N is in good shape mechanically, so 5' is no problems except in tall thick grass. I can cut tall weeds all day long because they don't get too thick, in most cases. Even when it needs tuning it will cut good, just a little slower. I also find it cuts best in 2nd and full throttle. 1st doesn't have momentum to get thru the thick stuff. HTH

No way would THIS 9n cut in 2nd. 1st and 3/4 to full throttle. As I said it IS tired. Smokes a bit blackish and compression so low even the 6 volt spins it like a top. Easy starter and good lift tho. Think I'll keep 'er. I will say that the longer I worked her, the less it seemed to smoke. Don't know if it was just the heat/expansion or maybe the previous owner let it sit long enough for the rings to stick?

jim,
Black smoke wouldn't be rings. That would be gray oil smoke. Black is generally too rich a fuel mixture.

Thanks. Well... even a mechanical dummy like me knows any smoke ain't a good thing and the tailpipe gets good and oily so I'm probably just being optimistic about it not being bad rings. Smells oily too... If it keeps running at least this good tho it'll be another 65 years old before a rebuild happens. How about switching to a straight 40wt oil? Or 20/50??

I'm thinking they should be as close as they can get. Actually I'm lucky enough to have the greatest neighbors a guy could have. A semi retired college professor of industrial arts next door and a full fledged tractor shop at the end of the road. So.... I don't do much more than basic maint. Fluids, tires, parts swapping, and such. I have all my own sheetmetal equip. on my place so we swap. Works out best all 'round. I'm pretty sure they have this old 9N running as good as it can for it's age and I sure ain't about to complain!! You all tractor safe. GOD BLESS OUR TROOPS, OUR VETERANS, AND THE U S of A !!

That 9N makes a good mower for sure. A set of limiter chains and don"t look back. I have both and the earlier N"s just might be "tougher" than the later. Not so many features but some basic "tough." The difference like between a concrete and hadite block.

How did you get your mind screwed around thinking a 5-foot hog is too big?

That"s a match made in heaven.

9 & 2N's have a faster pto speed than the rest of the n series and w/full trottle, you get a real tough unit. Works well with a rear 3pt snowblower or roto-tiller. Have fun!!!!

I have a 2n and I've had a 5' on it the last two days. I was cutting small trees maybe an inch in dia. I'm cutting up and donw hills, not much flat for me. I cut probly 3-4 acres this weekend so far. Hog cuts like a champ and the 2 just keeps chugging along. I never tried 2nd gear. That might help getting up the hills.

You be careful going up hill. Get the little wheels higher than the big wheels it doesn"t take much for them to keep going over. You headed up hill, hit a 6" bump as the governor kicks in, and the front end will come up and try to go over.
Do not lift the hog headed up hill.

Tell me more about the roto-tiller with the 2N. What tiller do you use? How deep can you get. That"s news to me that contradicts common wisdom on this board.

I've read many comments on this very forum how a 5 footer may be too big for the 'littler' guys. Turns out to be a lack of faith I guess. And, you are sure right about the lack of 'modern' features but tougher then nails. Just have to learn to lift 'on the fly' and they do just about all that the 'big boys' will.

Now all you have to add is the "Zane Thang", to add Draft Control to complete your 9'....I did just this pass year, wish I had done it 10 years ago.....
