Greenhorn Question of the Day

I have used my new tractor 3-4 times now with the bush hog and only occasionally have taken it out of 1st gear(when the bush hog was disengaged). Does the tractor need to be driven in the other gears(opened-up so to speak), occasionally? My Father told me that the only stupid question is the one that's never asked..... .....so,

Thanks,
NNO

Like the last guy said, if you are mowing for hours, you're giving that engine a workout. You should use your tractor in whatever gear you feel comfortable in. 1st year I had my 8N, I always worked it in first gear. Didn't matter if I was using the bush hog, hay rake, or baler. This year I have been mowing in 2nd and sometimes 3rd.

Just so you know, the term bushhog is used freely for most pull behind mowers, but there is only one true BushHog and it's at www.bushhog.com

Enjoy.

Not true Todd - the only stupid question is the one that you ask after you are stuck underneath the bushhog! (grin)

Are you using 1st gear because the grass is so thick or because you are heeding the advice not to hog in 2nd gear due to its relatively weak gearing? IMHO, Since you are getting the tractor nice and hot and worked completely for a couple of hours at a time, you are working it quite nicely. I cannot imagine that it needs to be opened up but if you feel the need for speed, then take a drive down 190 and then turn onto Old Baton Rouge Hwy. and come down and visit me and help me work on my N.
(grin!)

Todd, what kind of bushhog do you have? 5'? What brand and duty rating?

Have fun, buddy.
Andy

I bought a 4' ft. bushhog at the auction where we picked up the tractor. We have MANY trees spaced throughout the property, and this size bushhog was perfect for going in-between them. The brand name is Agri-Something. No clue on the rating. I kind of thought a "bushhog was a bushhog." Thanks for the response on the question. No one else has replied, so you must be right!

Todd
