Hill, I have a 1950 8n that has run fine for 2 years but now will not run or start without 1/4 choke, I have'nt done anything to it in 2 years, I guess if it ain't broke , don't fix it.

You gotta wonder if your spark is any good. Sounds weak. Bend the coil and plug wires and replace if they show surface cracks. Check to see if they are stranded copper core and replace if they are not. Remove the distributor and inspect the points. Replace the points, along with the condensor, if they don"t mate up right or they are worn, burnt, corroded, or missing. Inspect the cap for cracks, carbon trails, and damaged contact posts. Set the spark plug and distributor points gap to 25.
You might do yourself a some good to start with the tractor end of the battery ground strap and work your way forward removing, inspecting, and wire brushing clean and shiny every cable and wire connection on the tractor. It doesn"t take that long. I use a dielectric compound (greasy silicone goop) to make all my bright and shiny connections to keep out moisture and prevent corrosion. Replace any worn, corroded, or damaged wires, cables, or terminations. You get all that done then pull a plug, short it to the head, and crank the engine. Watch the spark so you know what a good one looks like for next time. You may want to look at the spark now so you know "before and after."

Sounds like its time for a carb rebuild, not a big thing but has to be done every few years. And if it sits for say 4-6 months out of the year your lucky it hasn't need it before.
