Spent yesterday swapping my engine and rebuilding the front axle when I realized what has been bothering me. I think my front wheels were inside out. I have 16" wheels and when I bought it I didn't pay any attention as most 8N's I see has 19" wheels but the deep part of the wheel was out and the valve was inside. Being in side out would that cause hard steering and extra strain on the bushings and could that been done for a special reason? Opinions PLEASE.

Bob..... ...would you believe that yer N's front tires are made to be mounted inside out iff'n you want? Each rim is "off-set" by 2". Yer front axle MAX width is 72" and by reversing yer front wheels you gitt the max tractor frontaxle spred of 76".

Standard front axle width is 52in. Min is 48 and Max is 72. (+ 4 more by reversing wheels) Wheel axle width is adjusted by the bolts. And is usually governed by row-crop spacing. I set my frontaxle width to 56" to center my front tires with my rear tires.

Bottom line, NOT TO WORRY. Generally you mount yer front wheels so you have eazy access to the valve stems to keep yer front tire pressure 26psi.

This is all explained in yer N-Owners Manual..... ...respectfully, Dell

Thanks guys. It just seemed that having the wheel reversed the center of load would be outside the king pin and if not reversed the center of load would be directly under the king pin alowing easier steering. But the wider front spacing would be more stable. Looks like give and take.

Your right , it will steer easier with the wheels dished in. The wheel will have less leverage to turn the spindle. Like using a 3' lever
to move a rock as 0pposed to a 6' lever

No such thing as inside out on either the front or rear wheels on an N series Ford. They are made to be mounted either way in order to adjust the track (wheel width). In the front the outside axles may be mounted in different positions and the wheels can be mounted either way.

As I said they were designed like that so it has nothing to do with bushing wear or hard steering.
