The 8n I just purchased seems to be in great shape. I have plowed and dicsed with and bush hoged 2 acres. It will run great for about 1 1/2 hours then stall. I can restart but will only run alittle while before it quits again. If I wait untill the next day same results. I think the gas tank might need to be replaced? I dont get to much sediment in bowl and when I pull bottom plug on carb I get good gas flow ? I don't know why it would run so well for so long and all of a sudden stall. Sometimes when it stalls I need to choke a little to get restarted?? Usually will start right up with no choke. Any ideas Let me know

There are quite a few time-limited problems. I think yours may point to a bad coil, if this is a front mount tank.

Had it been a shorter time, could have been a tank vacume, dry fuel bowl due to plugged filters.. bad ignition switch, or bad condensor.

I have replaced the Coil and it is wired right. I put in a new ignition switch and ballaster resister. I have 2 coils that i have been trying, neither coil is new. Could it be that the coils I have are doing this?? The coils do not get hot when the tractor stalls??? Are all 8n coils manufactured the same or is there a brand that is better than others. I am getting 6 volts at battery and 3.5 at the coil.

First.. post some info.. you mention ballast resistor.. but then mention wireing your coils correctly.. this leads me to believe you may have a side mount coil, as the front mount coils have only 1 wire.. and are more or less impossible to wire wrong.

So.. what ya got? front or side mount ignition? and what ground polarity/

Sorry for confusion. I have a 1948 8n,front mount dist. The reason i said wired right is because when I first bought the tractor I took it to a New Holland dealer and he replaced coil wire( 1 wire)and did a tune up. When I brought it home it ran great but I melted 2 coils. I then realized the man I bought it from had an 8 volt battery in the tractor. It is set up for a 6 volt system positive ground. So I replaced the battery, ballaster resister and ignition switch, tested volts an had 6 at battery and 3.5 at coil. I bought 1 more new coil at tsupply although that coil was on the tractor for a couple days before I realized the battery was an 8 volt, and a farmer gave me another used one. The tractor runs great except for the fact that it stalls after use 1 to 1 1/2 hours then runs like 5 minutes at a time after that. If I leave it for a day same results. Supposedly at tune up they replaced points and condenser. Carb seems to be getting enough gas?? Tank may need to be replaced but I did pull it,and cleaned it out with gas and I don't get much sediment at bowl???

6v at battery, 3.5v at the coil is about normal, and looks ok. Do go ahead and check the points, just make sure they aren't burnt.

With the correct voltages and resistor in line.. the coil and points should be ok. I doubt the 8v battery damaged the coil in that short of time.

I'd look for other things. Next time it stalls.. try jumpering past your key switch, if it is an old switch.. if this helps, then you may have a bad switch, making for weak spark. You might also pull a plug wire and see what color spark you have.. blue is good.. orange is bad. Another thing to check is next time it stalls.. if spark is good.. pull the drain fromt he carb and see if you have a good continous fuel flow.. if not. check the fuel system.

There are few things that take that long to manifest.. though i guess coil could be one.. Geerally when the coil quits.. it takes a while to cool before you can restart... Fuel flow ont he other hand.. if it were blocked.. enough could leak intot he bowl to get you going again.

Have some starting fluid handy.. see if it will start on starting fluid, then stall.. or keep running on gas after that.

After you do these tests.. check back.
