I have done this a few times with success if all of a sudden tractor starts to run lean. I cross 2 spark plug wires so it will back fire thru carb. when reved up. On a N ford I think it would be wires 1 and 2 . No guarantees but has worked for me if I have good supply of gas into the carb.

Go out int he fresh air and wave an unlit propane torch around the carb while it is running.. if the rpm changes, you know you have a vacume leak..

Well if all you did was replace the filter then you didn't get to the real problem. Rebuild or replace your carb, if you have a good fuel flow out the drain plug at the bottom of the carb. If you don't have a good flow then you have a fuel flow problem still

My Farmall had that problem. Cleaned/rebuilt carb twice with no results. Bought a new Zenith carb and fixed the problem. Old carb must have had a plugged up passage I just wasn't getting cleaned out.

Hi Rex,

When I first got my 49 8N in 1977 it would not run right unless the choke was pulled out/adjusted just right; no choke no good running/spit and spudder. I ran it that way for a few years because once you got the choke adjusted it ran fine.

I tried rebuilding the carb to no avail. The manifold had a small crack in it that I had braized to no avail.

I finally decided to buy a new manifold and carb and "eureka", problem solved. I don't know whether it was the new carb or the new manifold but it was nice to run the tractor without having to keep the choke pulled out.

HTH. Rick

I HAVE A 49 8N THAT HAS A SIMILAR PROBLEM.AFTER WINTER STORAGE IT WOULD NOT START. AFTER MUCH ADO I REMOVED THE MANIFOLD AND FOUND A MOUSE CONDO. AFTER RE-ASSEMBLY THE TRACTOR STARTED FINE BUT WOULD ONLY RUN ABOUT 20 MINUTES. I REPLACED THE COIL,CAP AND IGNITION SWITCH. I NOTICED AN EXHAUST LEAK AND TRIED A DOUBLE GASKET WITH THE SAME RESULTS. I"M PUTTING A NEW MANIFOLD ON THIS WEEKEND AND HOPE THAT"S THE PROBLEM.
