I just bought my first ever tractor, a 1950 8N. I've spent hours reading and looking on internet learning about this great machine. I'm waiting on manuals so I can work on it. It needs a lot of basic attention, but the one thing that's bugging me the most is the crank pulley wobbles like crazy. What could be causing this? Any help would be appreciated.

Had a wobble in mine too....when I rebuilt the engine I replaced it with a new one. Found that the flange on the pully was twisted. The new one spins around just fine.

That was the first think I found after I bought my 2N, But my pulley was actually broken. The center part was broken away from the flange part of the pulley. I guesas the belt had been tight enough that the two pieces had enough friction to run the water pump O.K.It was about ready to fly apart. I replaced it with the solid type Dell mentioned..Of course while I had the front axle separated from the motor I replaced the king pin.

Thanks for the information, it eased my mind alot. That pulley had me having second thoughts about buying this tractor, but I did anyway, it was such a good deal. I was thinking bent crank, seals that wouldn't seal,etc..

RMAC, the original pulley is still around, about $45.00 part number is 2N-6312. I've seen many that were simply worn out where they slid over the crank, probably run loose...thanks, Kelly.

Hi RMAC,

The front belt pulley on my 49 8N has wobbled ever since I have owned it (28 years). It really doesn’t hurt a thing except your pride. The N engine is not a high RPM engine.

If it bothers you, you can try to straighten it a little to lessen the wobble or get a new one. HTH. Rick

RMAC..... ...yer 3-part sheetmetal pulley probably bent. Replacement pulley is 1-piece billet lathe turned steel pulley designed for front end hydraulic pump drives but fits ennyways. Altho it is possible that yer 1-5/16" hex crownhead pulley bolt is loose. Tighen to 150 ft/lbs. tip: stuff some soft 1/4" rope down enny sparkie hole to keep yer crankshaft from turning when piston presses the rope against the cylinderhead..... ....Dell
