I just drove 40 miles and paid $50 bucks for 5gal. of New Holland Multi G 134 Hydro/Trans Oil,which meets Ford specs for ESN M2C134D. Sounds like I drove too far and paid too much, but will it be ok for my "50 8N? I"m not making another trip to town for a few days, and I"m ready to do some work on the 8N. I bought it at the Ford Tractor dealer, and the man said this works good in the older systems, and is what they recomended. Thanks, RMAC

Generic "Universal Tractor Fluid" from WallyWorld or TCS will meet the same specs, for about 1/2 the $$$.

IH HyTran or Deere HyGard (or is that the other way around?) will meet the "134" spec, too, and probably will not be $50.00 a pail, either!

However, your old "N" will probably be happier with good old 90- weight GL-1 gear oil.

Ditto waht the others said... It is the ne spec that Nh calls for.. pretty much a one size fits all fluid. If you have leaks or a weak lift.. the thin fluid will magnify those problems.. but otherwise.. it does work.

I liek the 90wt gl-1 or 3 mineral oil in my 8n and 2n, and i use the 134d equivalent oil from TSC in my NAA and 660 trans and hyds, and real gear oil 90wt, in my diffy's.. etc... though the 134d would be fine in all 3 sumps as well.

The 134 oil is fine but I use the heavier 90wt GL1 in my 52 8N. I get it at NAPA (part # 65-205 I think) for about 1/2 that. Amen on the new shifter boot. I changed mine out and now do not have any evidence of water in the tranny/hydralic oil. GA Jim

Yeah, that should work ok. If your hydraulics are noisy or leak down too fast you might try the GL-1 mineral oil next time, it"s heavier. M-4864-A & B is heavier and in the latest manual.
She isn"t too picky about it so long as you use something for use in hydraulic and gearbox. Internal and external leaks and noise seems to be the issues.
Some guys are still using the motor oil their edition of the manual said to use.
Keep water out by keeping a good shifter boot on there or out of the rain always or sticking a 5gal bucket over the shifter or something. Change fluid every spring to remove the condensate. With that in mind you might scout out a more affordable source before next spring. You should be able to find something for half that price.

It will work.
It won't break anything.

Personally, in my '50 8N, I use GL-1 (specification) mineral oil that I payed ~$40 for (for a 5 gallon bucket) at Tractor Supply.

If you hydraulic system is in good shape, the 134 should be fine, but... if you lift cylinder has a tendency to leak a little (or any of the valves in the pump), then you might not be too happy with the performance of your hydraulics with this oil in it.
