Big day for Old Warrior. I cleaned up the sump and with what's-her-name helping, we managed to get the newly rebuilt hyd control unit back in place without destroying the gasket. Torqued it all down, a good thing considering my fix on the broken bolt hole lined up and held torque. Filled tranny and center section with MC-134, filled rear end with 90 weight GL-5. Filled newly rebuilt hyd pump with MC-134, and cranked it up. Moved the touch lever up, and the lift arms lurched to the top. A couple of cycles, and the hyd unit is working smooth as silk, easily adjustable in position control. I forgot to check draft control, but confident that it is working well too. I do have a leak at the high pressure line connection, maybe I shoulda put in two o-rings, but it only has one working port, so I figured only one would do, could be the reason for that leak. The new clutch works, the PTO works with the Sherman in Low and High, but not in neutral. The tranny won't go into first, and the engine stalls when I put the tranny in reverse and ease the clutch out. That means the tranny is jammed up in two gears I figure. With the tranny in neutral and the Sherman in Low, engage the PTO and it works, plus the left rear wheel spins, so that means my newly rebuilt rear end is working. All in all, not too bad for such a large scale test.

Now, what's with the Sherman in neutral? It should work like it's not there, right? What do I look for in the tranny? I'll take the cover off and look down there, but it's all gears to me.

I'm no sherman expert from a technical standpoint but I do have one on my 9N. From my experience, the sherman needs to be in either high or low. If mine is between (I guess you'd call that neutral), it acts like the trans is locked up. When you let up on the clutch, nothing will move. When that first happened to me, I was mentally troubleshooting the trans and anticipating a big problem until I figured out the sherman lever had gotten bumped between high and low. Moved it into low, everything just fine.

Ramrod..... ..I also am having trouble with leaking high pressure line in that area. Remove the manifold back in the winter and used two O ring to reinstall at that connection. When I started using it this summer and the fluid heated up it leaked pretty bad. I keep the Jubilee about 20 miles away on the farm so brought it home, removed the manifold and replace the seals. Installed two O rings again and filled with 90 weight GL 1. Hooked up box grader and graded drive. (15 min.) No leaks so far but will keep eye on it. Some people might like to work on their tractor, but I would rather work with mine..... ..E. Ray

Sounds like a big day for the old warrior! Lots of positives, and only a few negatives - not bad. I don't have any Sherman experience, so I can't help you there. Good to hear the differential is working good.

Say - why the 134d in the tranny?

Well, I put 134 in the tranny because that is what I thought was supposed to go in there. Actually, you can put it in all three cavities so says the CNH guy. When I installed the Sherman, I followed John Smith instructions. He specified 134 in the Sherman, so I put a quart in it before installing. If I had it to do over again, I might opt for 90 weight GL5 in the tranny, as I did for the rear end.

Now how do I go about getting the tranny back in sync again?

Your reverse idler shaft is the very small one at the bottom of your tranny housing (of course). If it was me, I would pull your shifter cover, reach down on the left side of the tranny (as you would be sitting on the tractor) and see if the small revese idler shaft will slide front to back smoothly and engage the middle counter shaft. It is a tight fit, and you may need to use a large screwdriver or something. It may be bound right now, so you may have to do some "convincing" with a pry bar. Just don't get it into any teeth. Check to make sure something hasn't dropped down in between the teeth on the reverse idler and countershaft that may have bound it up. If all looks good, use a large screwdriver on the shifter plates to simulate the shifter shaft putting it in reverse and watch the movement. Make sure your shifter plates are not binding and it moves the gears.

I am betting your problems will be immediately obvious once you pull the shifter cover and take a peek.

Good luck,
Dan

Well, for me it is the only section I have not had to rebuild TWICE :)

You filled the tranny with MC134...but filled the rear end with GL-5? How ??? (Too many questions here to know which to ask first!)

NAA have seperate hyds, tranny, and diffy sumps.

If he has the sherman in low, and main tranny in N and the rear wheel spins, and then tries reverse and it stalls.. then he does indeed have it jambed in 2 gears.. but then.. I think he knows that already..
