8N valve assembly question

I've been working on the 8N I recently picked up and had the head off the engine(broken spark plug) and also to get a better look at the valves. The tops on couple of them were somewhat distorted in shape so I thought I might as well do a valve job. The good news is that is has adjustable tappets. A couple of the valve guides slid right out along with the springs,retainers etc yet all the others are tight and at varying downward depths which made it a little interesting removing the springs. I was careful to keep all the parts from each cylinder in it's own marked zip-lock bag. Should the guides slide out that easily? Should I soak the others with penetrating oil for a few days and try to tap them out ? What can I expect as far as installing new ones ? Thank you...John

The valves guides and springs should all come out as an assembly. That's the way you do it.

Take the manifold off the engine and then with a big flat screw driver that has been ground so that one flat is lower than the shank of the screwdriver reach in the port and pry the guide down with the home made pry bar. Pull the horse shoe keeps off the guide after you get the guides down enough to free them. Then using that same big flat screw driver drive the whole valve and spring assemby out the top of the engine. The intake is going to be a lot tighter than the exhaust because only the intake uses a seal. The exhaust does not use a seal on the guide. No need to keep them separate or to put them back in the same holes. The seats will have to be reground to accept new valves so it doesn't matter. This is something that normally is not done at home. It needs to be done at an automotive machine shop.

Zane, thanks for your input. After I removed all the valves and using "top engine cleaner" removed most of the carbon buildup. The intake seals look pretty good but 1-2 of the exhaust seals are a bit rough.I wasn't really planning just yet on breaking the engine down further and haul it in somewhere to have the seals machined. What are my options ? Can I safely use some extra fine wet/dry sandpaper or some other product to try and clean the valve seals?

Tom, I just spoke with "Derrick" for the first time a couple days ago and he seems to really know the 8n's. Would you agree? Myself,being the proud owner of a 1950 8N for about one whole month now, just about everyone knows more than me. Thanks to this forum and all the helpful folks like you willing to share their knowledge, I'm learning.

Absolutely right..Dereck and Don(the Dad) both are
very knowledgeable and willing to share that knowledge..And you won't beat their prices and service.I grew up on a 2N. I already had a small Kubota and really didn't need another tractor BUT I wanted one. I have really enjoyed working on it and have learned a l;ot from the fine folks on this forum.Good luck with your N..

Make sure the C shaped retainers that fit around the guidethat hold them in are not bent when you install the new valves . I had to flatten and pinch mine to fit in the valve guide groove better.

Yes , spray them with something to loosen them up at least overnight . The carbon builds up on them and makes them stick. Don't force them out , give them more oil and tap easy they will come out. Just replaced mind with all new ones . You might want to reseat [ lapp ] the valves. Good Luck

Sounds good. For the past couple days now I've liberally squirted MM oil on those stuck guides. Tomorrow if it doesn't rain here in Ohio I'll give them a little tap. 2-3 of my exhaust valves look a skoch distorted so I contemplating just getting the whole new valve train kit. My concern at this point is a couple of the valve seals are a little rough too. Currently I'm not really prepared to break the engine down further and haul it in to get them machined, I'm hoping I can clean them up with a fine abrasive or something ? Is there such an animal as a portable valve seal grinder? I guess the real question is does it make sense to install all new valves/guides,etc with questionable seals? Common sense tells me probably not.

Yes, there is a portable valve seat grinder. I do not know how expensive they are but they do a good job. A local automotive shop just did mine and they look like new..Also you can buy lapping compound and a lapping stick(with suction cups on each end).. If your seats arent pitted much, you might get by with lapping them with the stick and compound..
