PTO Won't Engage

I recently installed a new 1 3/8" PTO to replace the original which leaked and had about 1/2" of end play on my 52 8N. The new PTO assembly went in without a hitch, but now the PTO will not engage. When I pulled the old shaft out, the PTO was disengaged. Should it have been engaged? It shouldn't matter, should it?

Removed the new PTO shaft and could see that the hub gear had fallen down. Was able to manipulate it with a 36" dowel rod while my wife pushed the control lever toward the engage position. It dropped into place and the PTO shaft when back in with no trouble. It now works fine. It seems the ITT Manual should tell you to leave the PTO engaged before pulling the old shaft out -- a glaring omission if you ask me.

I've read on this site that the collar that engages and disengages the PTO can drop down and make it real hard to reinstall the shaft if the lever is disengaged. Not sure if it could drop all the way out and not work anymore or not. Hopefully Zane or someone with more firsthand knowledge than me will be able to tell you more.
Good Luck, Lee

On second thought, pull it back out and engauge the PTO lever and try to put it back in. It might just be stiff or a tight fit where the coupler engauges the front end of the PTO shaft. HTH. Rick

Hi Ron,

Did the new shaft assembly go in smoothly? You can remove the PTO lever/inspection plate on the left side and check to see if the shift mechanism is engaging like it should.

Removing the PTO shaft and replacing it should not have affected the PTO shifting mechanism. There is a possibility the new shaft spline that links to the PTO/transmission coupler is not engaging properly for some reason. HTH Rick
