PTO shaft on an 8N?

I don't know much about tractors.

I took a look at a 1950 8N yesterday. The PTO shaft is smaller than PTO shafts I've seen on other tractors. Is this standard with 8Ns?

The seller mentioned an adapter and he mentioned a replacement with a larger diameter shaft.

If I were to buy this tractor should I leave the current PTO shaft or replace it? (The current one looks like it's the original and may never have been used.)

He's also asking $3950 for it. The sheet metal is in good shape and the tractor is almost complete. There are no lights. Is this price too high for an 8N? What's a reasonable offer to make?

Thanks,
Dan

Pgmrdan, I try not to get into a discussion about wheather a price is or isn't too high, you know what is or isn't a fair price to "you".Having said that ,I had to sell one of my "n"s to continue my new hobby,,,, "N"S !It had rebuilt engine (complete), new tires, guages, radiator.battery, Org. lights front and rear, clutch, rear seals and straight sheet metal with a nice paint job (I did it too, N.P.) $3400. Too low here in N.C. at least I think so.

That tractor might be worth 3950, IF, it was absolutely mint, was fully complete, and had about 10 minutes on a fresh complete mechanical rebuild. There is just no way the tractor can be worth 4000 unless it is some RARE FIND (like a woman you would marry AND take home to meet MOM!)
Just my 2 cents about $3950.

I think way too high for around here. There are some good ones around here that can be had for 2000. See my post below.

for 3950, the n would have to be absolutly imaculate, not "almost complete" or have some impliments included with it. you do know that lites were an option, not all tractors came with them, the pto shaft on the n from the factory is 1 1/8, this will not work with modern 1 3/8 size pto shafts, you can get an adapter to convert it over to the newer size, if your going to run a brushog, it is strongly recomended that you purchase a over running clutch, which can also be ordered to make the conversion, hope you enjoy it if you buy, ericlb
