I borrowed this picture from a post by Jeb2N. Can anyone tell me what the shiny silver gizmo is next to the air filter? Would you know what the label is on the air filter? Is the radiator cap on this original? Thanks!

Hey 6'er;

Yup, others have chimed in very correctly. That's the optional 9N/2N precleaner for the air filter. I have actually replaced the one shown in the picture with the correct glass jar and bail which are available from the barkleys. I think I got my radiator cap from TSC, but they can be had just about anywhere, including this site.

As to the mini-tractor; I put that in there because 1) lots of folks do it and I thought it was cute, and 2) to demonstrate one of the many nasty things (deere flies) that the pre cleaner keeps out of the engine because people always ask about it! Note that the pre cleaner was also optional on the 8N as well, but it bolted to the side of the hood and stuck out. When not installed, the louvered door covers up the hole.

That shiney thing is the glass jar to a cyclone pre-cleaner. Its job is to trap larger debris before it gets to the oil air cleaner. It sits just in front of the air intake on your air cleaner so all incoming air must pass through this pre-cleaner. The heavier stuff dropps down the tube into a glass jar as air is being swirled inside the pre-cleaner. When the glass jar starts filling up, you just unhook it, dump it out, and re-attach. Very helpful for when you are mowing and stuff is flying all over the place. I have one on all three of my tractors. Many that are show tractors place a miniature John Deere tractor inside this glass jar as a conversation piece.

The label on the air filter is a reminder to change the oil in the cup every so many hours with the same type of oil you have in your engine. You can still get these decals aftermarket.

Dell did a great job of describing the radiator cap.

Good luck,
Dan

I looked at my air cleaner and I'll be darned if I can see how one of those would go on. Doesn't really matter, though, as I have so many parts to fix now I really don't need to shop for a precleaner. Funny that Ford guys pick on the JD tractors. I always thought that was the territory of the International guys. I DO want to replace my ugly radiator cap, though. Have to figure out whether or not I have the pressurized system (?)

It's because there's just so darned many of those little toys out there! Personally, my ideal tractor stable would include my already restored 2N, an unstyled B, and a farmall F-20 or Regular. One of each to be happy.

If the lugs on the radiator cap fit on the INSIDE of the radiator, it's non-pressurized (also has a big hangover in the tank that comes back over the fan). If the lugs grab onto the outside of the neck, it's pressurized. Both caps are readily available if you go to the right supplier.

Shorty..... ..that silver looking object is usually a GLASS JAR pre-filter that usually "trapps" a green-yellow mini-tractor innitt. The reason it looks silver is reflection?

The "streamlined" radiator cap fits the pressurized N-Radiator. The early N-Radiators were UNPRESSURIZED and mounted a silver alumnium streamlined cap. Pressurized and NON-pressurized caps are NOT INTERCHANGEABLE. Howsomevers; pressurized radiator is approved replacement for NLA non-pressurized radiator..... ..Dell
