#3 Distributor Contact Being Hit By Rotor

Inside the dist. cap, the rotor button is striking the #3 contact. This is happening because of why? There is minimal slack in the dist. shaft, but it does have some there.
Thanks, Roman

It is likely that your front axle is striking the distributor cap when the right front wheel is pushed up as high as it will go when moving over rough ground. Run it up on the right front wheel until the left front wheel is off the ground and then see if the axle is touching the distributor cap nipple. If it is then you should raise the left front wheel up it's maximum and weld a 3/4" nut to the axle support stop where the axle hits when the right front wheel is up and this will fix it the easy way.

The other way is to pull the whole front end and rebush the axle and replace the pin and hope it fixes it.

What are you calling "minimal slack"? You can measure the points gap at each distributor cam lobe to see just what you have. If there is more then 0.002" it is too much. The spec on the side-mount is 0.024 to 0.026 inches. You can figure the front-mount won"t stand any more difference, so call that gap 0.014 to 0.016 inches. Don"t go backwards if you go past a lobe or you introduce backlash and the measurement can be wrong. If you miss a lobe then keep turning the shaft in the same direction to bring it up again. That"s the rule whenever you time or gap that puppy.
Different things are considered in that spec, one would likely be the gap out there on the rotor tip.

This is usually caused by worn distributor bushings or the cap not being fitted correctly. I guess you could even have a out of round cap from all the reports of cheap, foreign junk parts we seem to be seeing more of. James

The cap and rotor have Made in Mexico affixed to them. The slack I was speaking of is the dist shaft wobble to the sides. It seems plausible that if the rotor was striking one contact due to bad bushings, it would strike them all. Anyway, there is a large gouge mark in the #3 contact inside the cap, the right axle would hit the distributor at the #2 port. Maybe the rotor button is slightly off-center. I have erratic fire at #3, when the wire is pulled off the plug there is little change in idle.

I see this some times. I put new bush'ns in the dist. If their is a lot of wear on the top dist shaft I drive the new bush'n in the piont plate and then fource the point plate over the shaft. If you ream the new bush'n out to fit over the worn shaft you will still have to much play. I then take a Dremel tool and grind the dist cap post that is hit'n down a little. I hope you did not use the cheap point set they are JUNK. I have only seen this when the dist shaft is 'bout worn out were it runs in the top bush'n. # 3 is were I see'em hit also it may be the cap but a EZ fix.

I have installed the new-fangled hei in place of the old points system. Maybe a new distributor is the way to go?

I saw that there were some small cracks in the rear of the dist housing where the bushing goes in. Do you think that it is fixable with a new bushing? Or are you talking about dremeling the contact?

talking about dremeling the contact, its not uncommon to see this even with a top of the line cap, I spec all of'em now are imported
