I flushed my radiator with that brown sludge in it tonight. Filled with vineger and let run for 50 minutes, then drained. Alot of brown stuff came out, and drained her untill water was clear. Put back together, filled with distilled water and let run for 10 minutes, then i drained her again. Alot less brown stuff second time but noticed that it looked like some oil mixed with water. Filled radiator with 50/50 antifrreze and started tractor which seemed to run great. As usual did not need to choke at all to start and no white smoke either. I let her cool down open radiator cap to find older brown looking oil top layer of anti freeze. What do you guys think. Should I run her and just keep an I on fluid levels or should I be looking at other problems

Drain and save your anti freeze, then do another vineagar flush. Also if you can make up an adaptor that will hook in to the block drain, hook up your garden hose to the adaptor and turn it on with the rad, cap off and go have a beer or 2. Or in other words let it run for an hour or more. That engine has 50 plus years of junk down in there and it takes a little time to get it all out. When I did my flush on my Oliver 77 I let it run with the garden hose all after noon

Actually today I decided to run it and bush hoged 1/2 hour. Let cool and checked rad. again, still had oily film on top, but did not look any worst. dip stick looked good, tractor ran good. Should I flush again and if I do where is that block drain located????? Am i looking at a bad head gasket?? No white smoke out of tail pipe but did notice a little white smoke coming from cap where you put oil. Also my oil pressure has always read in the middle of low and high on gauge. today after bushhogging I notice oil pressure was at the low line on gauge. Do any of these symptoms indicate head gasket or head??/ If head gasket is it something I should do right away and how involved?? Tractor ran well though?????

As long as it doesn't overheat I'd just run it like it is. As far as oil preassure what weight oil are you running?
I like to run a stright weight oil like 30W or if its hot out a 40W. I never run a muti weight oil.

I run the same type of oil in every thing I own, 20 plus tractors and all my car/trucks. I use Valvoline raceing oil, in the summer I run 40 or 50W and in the winter I run 30W. I have always have good luck with that oil and the few engines that I have rebuilt after useing that oil have been clean inside and almost not ridge at the top of the cylinders which tells me its doing a very good job.

Everyone has their own opinion concerning engine oil for Ns but I would not recommend 10W30 except in cold winter weather. Maybe 15W40 if the engine is in good shape. Otherwise, I would recommend 30W or 40W in the summer.

You get it flushed the way you like, then try to remember every once in awhile to open up the block cock to flush out that brown stuff that"s settled into the bottom of the block. Shouldn"t be much. Might try to make it part of your oil change chore.

Pete..... ...sounds like you were on the right trail in flushing yer engine, but you QUIT TOO SOON. Drain and save yer new 50/50 anti-freeze and do some more flushing. nuttter round of vinegar wouldn't hurt. Sometimes the crud is knee deep and takes some doin's to gitter all. What little comes out with yer new anti-freeze, don't worry about it. Iff'n it worries you, just decant it like you would fine old wine to gitt the cork and dreggs outta that bottle of Madeiria..... ..Dell
