The clutch on my 8N will not work. I"ve called for estimates to have the clutch replaced and I"ve been given costs ranges of $600 to $750. This seems excessive. Is a clutch something I can try tackeling myself? I"m not mechanically inclined but can read through a manual.

I just changed out the clutch on my 1949 8N less than a month ago.
I was surprised at how easy it is.
And I don't have a garage to work in.
I did it working out under some shade trees.

You wouldn't believe how easy this is.
Took me about 2 1/2 days from start to finish.

It worked out just like the people on this site told me it would.
You can do it too.

What"s wrong with the clutch? Worn clutches slip.

Changing a clutch is pretty basic grunt mechanic work. No special skills or tools required.

You have to split the tractor. That intimidates a lot of us but most guys are pleasantly surprised when it goes so easy.

Thanks for the reply. When I depress the clutch pedal, the gears won"t engage. If I do need to replace it, do you know of a good source for instructions? Thanks

Sounds like maybe your clutch might just be stuck; happens when oil gets on it. You can probably unstick it yourself. Do a search on here for stuck clutch. Start by blocking the pedal down for a while. -Bryan

Have you adjusted the clevis there at your left toe? The Ford 8N Operator"s manual gives you clutch adjustment and replacement instructions. The I&T FO-4 Shop manual is a good addition to the Operator"s manual if you want to do your own repairs across the board.
Worn clutches slip and spin. Guys say the hydraulic fluid makes the Ford clutch sticky and causes it to not disengage. I"ve found that a worn clutch release shaft causes even a brand new clutch to not disengage. You have to pull the release shaft clear out of there to inspect it for wear. You can do that pretty easy once you get the tractor split.
Get a manual or two and get in there and take a hard look at what you got then figure what parts you need. The parts are affordable easy to come by.
You might want to replace the tranny input shaft seal while you"re in there. That"s easy when you have it apart already.
