Ok. Still learning and I've read through some of the old posts on this topic, but I still have a few questions.

After painting my 8N and putting her back together, I noticed the hydraulics weren't lifting (never tested them prior to painting). I checked the dipstick (right side of seat sitting on tractor) and it showed it was at an acceptable level.

Then I opened the fill cap (2.5" plug just below the starter button) and it looked dry. I went ahead and added 1 gallon of fluid to it, but it still doesn't look like the gears are even dipping into the fluid. Is this normal? Do I have other issues w/ my hydraulics?

Thanks in advance,

Justin

Justin..... ..DO NOT OVERFILL yer hydraulic fluid. It will overflow out yer rearaxle trumpets and oil yer brakeshoes. NOT GOOD. It will also pump itself out yer tranny front seal and oil yer clutch and make it slip. NOT GOOD

Yes, it looks like yer tranny gears don't have ennyoils ...but... tranny gears actually act like a pump and splash lubricate themselves while running. Theres 5-gals of hydro-tranny oil in yer tractor pumpcase. Plenty for gearbox and diffy. Many operate their N's slightly underfilled so they don't oil their brakes and clutch.

Tip: remove the bottom bolt of yer 6" round dipstick plate. Iff'n oil comes out, letter drain 'cuz yer overfilled. Iff'n nuttin' comes out, yer underfilled too little, add some oil. Thats the correct oil level, bottom bolt hole, now markitt on yer 8" dipstick with a file scratch. Simple, eh?..... .respectfully, Dell

I just happened to be reading everything about 8Ns posted recently on the forum(mine is 1948), saw this and went out to remove the bottom bolt per discussion as I had redone the oil last Fall. When I got the bolt out, I lost at least a quart, maybe two quarts of oil. Thank you all for this discussion! I learn more all the time! Bob

Ok. Sounds good guys! I'll check it this evening. It was a little shy when I put the gallon in, so hopefully I didn't overfill it too much. I have a slight PTO seal leak anyway, so it'll probably work itself out.

I must not have the PTO engaged when testing. I'll check everything out tonight and let you know tomorrow if that's not the fix.

Thanks again!
Justin

The N uses about 5g's of hydro fluid. That is also the tranny oil and diffy oil. People are pretty well split on using a 90wt gl-(1 or 3) oil.. or a UTF type fluid. Both have plus's and minus's.. but both work.

Do you have the pto engaged? and do you see it spinning? The pto has to be engaged and spinning before the belly pump will start pumping.

If the pto is spinning.. but you have no lift.. you will need to remove the round inspection plate where the dipstick is, and look in with a flashlight to look for leaks, and at the pump.. may be a blown gasket.. etc Keep your fingers out of there while it is running.. also.. if you added a gallon of oil.. expect some of it to come out when you pull the side cover..

post back if you need more info / with what you find.

Ok. I will verify that the PTO is engaged tonight when I get home.

So as long as the dipstick says that it has plenty of fluid, I'm alright? It just scared me seeing the gears like that and didn't want to run the risk of screwing something up.

Thanks for the response!

Justin

Actually.. underfilled is a tad better than overfilled. Overfills will find and exploit leaky rear axle seals, and leaky tranny input shaft seals.

It's safe and accepted to fill the tranny with oil, and remove the bottom bolt in the side cover and stop filling when oil dribbles out there... usually 4.5 or 4.75 gallons.. etc.

There are lots of 'oilslingers' in gear box designs.. that gets the oil going. You doubt? Pull your tranny oil fill cap and start the tractor up.. it will put your mind at ease... take a shop rag or handfull of paper towels with you to wipe off with...

Ok, got her checked out tonight. Didn't have the PTO engaged the first time. She raises and holds like a dream now. Luckily it was about a gallon low as I'm just up to the full mark. Thanks for all the help, guys!

Once I got that figured out, I wired up my implement and tail lights. My new plugs, distributer cap, and distributer gasket kit just arrived tonight, so I'll have something to do tomorrow night. Almost there . . .
