Fluctutating Throttle

Hello All!

Started up my 2N for the first time since I've been working on it. It has a new carburetor and new governor spring. From about mid-throttle to open throttle, the engine "fluctuates"...a constant, rather quick fluctuation...engine speed does not remain steady. Other than that, runs very well.

Is float setting something I should check? Any other suggestions?

Thanks!

Sounds like you say that the throttle is 'hunting'. I'd deffinately check carb to gov adjustments, and then ensure your carb settings are correct. Sounds liek you might have a preload on a gov spring.

Check the governor linkage to the carburetor and especially around the governor spring since you replaced it. You may have installed it wrong and it may be binding somehow.

No the float level is not what is causing the throttle to fluctuate.

However you could try turning the high speed needle in and out to see what if any changes it makes. Too lean it will hesitate when the throttle is opened quickly. Too rich and it will smoke and sputter.

Thanks, Zane. I'll look into that. The float thing reminded me of a Massey-Harris that I had. I can't get my 2N out right now...but I'm curious to see what it does under a load. I had a Massey-Harris that ran great until you started to put a load on it at higher throttle setting, like go up a small hill, then the engine would fluctuate and surge. Turned out, the float was not set correctly.

I see in the manual where the governor spring is to be not too free but not preloaded...is this with the throttle set all the way down to idle?

Thanks!
