I don"t own a tractor and never have but I"m looking for one for my acreage. I"ve spotted 2 8N"s that look interesting.

I"m looking at one that"s in good shape with a few minor problems. The guy is asking $4,000. I figure it"s worth more like $3,000.

I saw another one that looks like an older restoration with some recent "freshening up". He"s asking for $6,000. I think it"s worth more like $4,000.

Am I just out of touch with current prices or are the people around me gouging?

Thanks,
Dan

My brother paid $1800 for a '50 8N with a 5' bush hog. So I suppose it where your at (NW Fl.). Rebuilt motor, lights and all worked. Then my brother passed and the tractor became mine. That was in '97 I've done some work on it(mostly from my cousins mess ups) when I was not around. But now the tractor run great and I use it a lot. But I would rather have my brother than his tractor.

Seems very high to me. You can get more tractor (ie. live pto, power steering, etc.) for around that $4,000.

In the state paper yesterday-48 8n runs good/appearance rough-plus hog & tandem axle 6x16 trailer: $2500. That"s a pretty standard price for tractor and implement.

Those prices are high.. IMHO. 4000$ should have no problems.. and be restored or at least great condition refurbed. Workers with minor issues are generally in the 1800 to 2200 range. Good workers 2200-2900, semirestored/refurbed.. up to 3500.. depending on rubber and tin.

Hundred series and NAA are in that upper range too.

You can pick up a good 8N around here usually for around $2500. I bought mine for $2350 a few years back and it came with a bush hog, two plows, and a disk. One of the plows was a dearborn slat back 2 x 12.There's not a dent in mine 49 and no rust.

I have seen several since than as low as $2000. These were tractors in pretty good shape with good sheet metal and in good working order.

None were "restored" but all were good tractors to restore.

Here in the Richmond VA area, those prices are too high by at least $1k, more like $1.5k. The further you get from Richmond, the lower the price; a working N, no smoke & good hydraulics, will go for $2k to $2.5k; bring it to Richmond & the price goes to $2.5-$3k. Around here, it had better be rebuilt w/ good painted sheet metal or have 2-3 pieces of equipment when you get to the $4k range. My suggestion is to tell them you can't afford the asking price, but if they really need to get rid of it at (name your price) then give you a call. Then, keep looking.

Dan, Around here (East Texas)"N's" go from about $800 barely running and $3200 in very nice condition. The reason is pretty simple - for not too much more money one can buy a modern tractor with more power, features, etc. I'd think that a $6000 N is a trailer queen and only a collector would consider it.

Just to throw another in the pot here: Mine is an 8N,1948, and last Summer I paid $1500 for it. It was in running conditon with everything working as I drove it two miles home on the road. It has a front bucket. I would say that it will be requiring some work as, though it is fairly well maintained, it is not deeply restored. Owner was asking $2400. Bob of Nothern NY.

Both prices are very high for an 8N most of them I see sell for $1500-3000 and thats about tops. Shot I have an 8N I'll sell you for $2000 and it has good back tires and is still on 6 volt.

Here in N. Carolina, mostly E. of the mountains to the coast, I"ve seen good working tractors that are good mechically and need a bit of exterior work go in the $1200 to $2200 range some with a few pieces of equip, ones that have been restored go for $4000+. There is one in the NC ag paper with 7 pieces of equip for $4000. I"d keep looking if it were Me.

Near Cincinnati where I live it takes a very very good 8N to bring $4,000 let along $6,000. Here, $4,000-$4,500 will buy a decent 860, which is nearly twice the tractor.

Prices vary dramatically with both location and more especially with the season. Either of those machines would go for substantially less in November. I would have called those prices high last spring but this year I have seen several 8ns and a 9n sell in that region here in Southwest Montana

Your mileage may vary
