Well I got that junk out of radiator and every thing looks great. Back to my original problem ( tractor quits running after an hour of work?? I bush hoged yesterday for about an hour, every thing going great untill tractor stalled. It would start right up and continue to hog and would stall after a couple of minutes. It continues to do this, but heres the kicker, if I take the bush hog off the tractor it will start running find again no stalling This also happened when I was plowing??/ Something that has to do with the work load???? Does this ring a bell with anyone. I have changed battery 6volt front mount dist., ignition, ballaster resister, pulled gas tank and cleaned, cleaned all 3 filters??, cleaned air filter. This only accurrs after about an hour of work?????

Peter..... ..there are 4-common runtime issues with frontmount engines.

1) runs for about 1-min and quits; bad condenser
NOT yer stated problem
2) runs for about 5-mins and quits; clogged fuel filters (3) NOT yer stated problem
3) runs for about 15-mins and quits; gunked up ignition switch guttz
NOT yer stated problem
4) runs for about 1-hr and quits; restarts after cooling off Sound like yer stated problem? BAD FRONTMOUNT squarecan ignition coil.

Heres the deal, the frontmount coil insulative tar OVERHEATS and melts and internally shorts out some of the coil windings and you loose yer sparkies strength and the engine quits. The insulative tar hardens overnite and restarts just fine the next morning.

As for your engine quiting while plowing or brushhoggin', sounds like its slightly "lean". Enrich yer down-pointing mainjet 1/8 turn CCW atta time. Lean mixture and weak sparkies, sure bett for runnin' problems..... ....Dell, yer self-appointed sparkie-meister

while you had the gas tank off did you check the vent hole on the top of the tank? Just a thought.-Bill

The same thing happened to mine as it would run fine but when it had a load to pull, it would quit after some time and would not start again until the next day. I added anti-freeze, rebuilt the carb, cleaned all fuel filters, put in a new coil, points, cond, new dist cap, wired around the ignition switch, etc. Finally, I got back the where I started - thinking it was the cooling system and it was overheating. I flushed it out and thought I'd check the thermostat to see if it was opening fully, only to find out there wasn't one. As soon as I put in a new thermostat the problem was solved. A bad radiator core would do the same thing. In this board someone passed on that an old 8N mechanic said that without the thermostat the anti-freeze would run through the radiator too quickly to cool it. It sounded odd as one would think that would also mean that it would run through the engine too fast to get too hot, but that's not the case and he was right. It overheated without one. Check to see if you have one, or that your is working. It only takes a few minutes.

I aggree with the gas cap theory, it might take an hour or so to reach a vacuum in the tank. Easy enough to check, leave the cap loose and try it.

With the vapor pressure of gasoline heated in the tank over the hot engine in warm weather, a clogged vent is not very likely. If the vent were clogged, what you would get in summer weather after running a half hour would be a blast of vapor, and maybe gas when you removed the cap.

More likely it is an electrical component in the ignition system breaking down when it gets warm, as Dell says.
