Shades of gray.....

Sounds kind of mysterious! Really what I want to know is how many shades of Ford gray are there? I am painting parts with BPS Tractor and Implement enamel and it LOOKS like it is a bit lighter than the old gray paint that is currently being stripped from the air cleaner. The label says "5339-13 Ford Gray". Is this the right color? Also, if anyone has a standard measure formula for the lye gruel stripper I could like to have it. My recipe is a box of this and a box of that...makes it hard to adjust down to small amounts.

I used the TSC MF gray on a couple of implements & on some replacement parts on the 165(very close match).

One thing though, it's pretty soft for about a month w/o hardener. You can handle it after 24 hours w/ no problems, but it scratches real easy 'til it's fully cured.

Hi 6N's Short,

I, too, just completed painting my 1946 2N...well, I gotta re-do the hood after it fell on the barn floor...dang it...but I, also, used BPS Massey-Ferguson Gray from Tractor Supply. I went through the "what is the right color" mode for a while and finally figured that 1) It's going to be a work tractor...a beautiful one...but a work tractor, so it's going to get scraped and rubbed and gas spilled (I'll try not)...so I didn't want to do a "trailer queen" paint job on her and figured enamel to be the best all around paint for my purposes, and 2) the BPS Gray is beautiful...I don't know if it's dead-on, but it sure is close to original, and 3) my research seems to find that there were variations on the gray paint that Mr. Ford put on those tractors, so it didn't seem worth it for me to fret so much over it. If you're restoring for show purposes...you may wish to go otherwise.

For what it's worth, I used the can paint through a sprayer with hardener (Valspar/BPS hardener from TSC)and thinned a bit with Valspar's Naptha...just like it says in the instructions...and I'm VERY pleased with the results.

Good luck!

Get ready, boys, here comes another paint comment. I have a 1945 2N, currently in progress (means still rusty and painted too many times in various places with strange colors). Got it in good shape mechanically (what are loose bearings, anyway?) and so to paint. Only original paint left was on inside of oilbath aircleaner. Never faded, never repainted. TSC sells MASSEY-FERGUSON grey- BPS 4432-22(qts.) Also has it in rattlecans. I painted some and compared with original-- seems a dead ringer to me.

I have to drive 100 miles to get to a TSC (they are our only BPS outlet in this state) and I did it last week to get more of it. Your mileage may vary. I am sure the factory did not use infrared measuring rays to match all their paint- and the shades probably varied a lot. All Model A Ford engines were painted "Ford Green", for example, and there are lots of variations on that color. So, there you go....

Unfortunately, there is no standard "ford gray". Ford had their own versions such as "Medium Gray" and "Light gray" that were used on various tractors. Personally, I went down to NAPA and looked through every paint sample they had in a single stage paint and found one that I thought was close and went with it. If you want it, It is NAPA paint code #6334 according to my recipt. Consequently, JAG (another poster on this board) gave me a napa number of MAE33302 but my NAPA couldn't do anything with that number. I'm very happy with how my 2N turned out color-shade wise.

MAE33302 sounds like a PPG paint code. MAE is the prefix for PPG Omni Acrylic Enamel (33302 would be the actual color code).

Thanks for all the info guys! I am heading to TSC to check out the MF gray and see if it is a tich darker. This enamel is so easy to put on, I would like to stay with BPS. Appreciate everybodies info. This also will be a working tractor. Not hard, because there t'ain't much around here it can do, but it will work. Thinkin it will pull a conditioner eventually. Anyway, back to TSC.

I have a rule I try to go by and it's "try not too talk down a product or person" because things are different to different people.I hope I'm not breaking my rule but I found the gray at TS was way to light even for the 8ns.This is my 5th "n" and my 2nd. 8n.I've always used Napa Nason Paint (synthetic enamal)and like it. I'm better pleased with it and will stay with it.That it if my "LW" lets me have another.Or I might redo the one I'm playing with.
