Recently just purchased my very own 48 8n (sn 52712). Grew up with one as a kid, and after many hours of researching tractors, kept coming back to the 8n. I'm having a blast working on this thing, and it's already worked some hard hours around the place.

Quick question tho'. I really need a loader for the thing to be complete. I've heard of the ford and dearborn loaders, but recently heard of a "Davis" loader that, according to the dealer, came off of an 8n.

It's about a hundred miles away, so I'd hate to waste a trip with a trailer if these loaders aren't any good. It's apparently in really good shape, other than normal wear and tear.

Any thoughts? Thanks in advance....this is a great site!

Thanks to all! Craig...nice looking setup! The dealer doesn't seem to know the model...but it does have the front hydraulic pump, and he's sure it came off of an 8n. The guy that consigned it (according to the dealer) is firm on $1250....I asked him if he'd wiggle, but he said he didn't think so.....any thoughts? Probably worth the 100 mile trip with a trailer if it's in good shape.

As far as the weight issue on the back, I've got one original rim with calcium chloride in it. The other is a new rim and tire. I could tell by the weight on the left side when I jacked up the rear end (and some leakage around the bead) I also noticed some serious wiggle on both sides, indicating bad hubs/seals. The guy I bought it from said this was normal....but after spending many hours on this site, I realize I probably need new hubs/seals.....no biggie....still love this thing....but I will get a buddy to help rassle those rear wheels around. Hubs are about $30 cheaper apiece on this site!

Had to pick up some PB Blaster to break the lugs on the old rim....still busted a breaker bar and my knuckles.

What a great afternoon!

I'll keep everyone posted.

Go to Tractor Photos here on the left side of the page. Search 1952 8n, go to Craig McGee. Thats my 8n with a davis loader, Skyline model. Set in loader, hyd bucket, just a great loader. But there are other models. If you have other questions, let me know. Craig

I've had several "N"'s with the Davis loaders.

THe Davis loaders were WAY AHEAD of their time, and rival any loader now on the market.

Does the loader come with a front pulley mounted
hydraulic pump?
What do you do to put weight on the rear so you
can lift more than 100 pounds without the rear
wheels loosing traction?

The Davis loaders use a live pump driven from the engine crankshaft.

I have my rear tires "loaded" with CCl. You can move a LOT of dirt set up that way. I also have a barrel of rocks that I can pick up with the three-point hitch when even MORE weight is needed.
