I have torn down my 8n to see valves and pistons.#3 piston is very lose in cyclinder ,so I guess next step is to tear off oil pan see what is wrong.Guess my questions are how difficult is this job to rebuild engine and is it worth it.I am fairly mechanical, but have not done any thing this intensive. My comp test was #1,2-120 #3-30 #4-100 Did it wet on 3 and maybe 10# change.Any help would be appreciated

Even if you find that you have a valve seating problem, I would still be looking for the cause of the #3 piston being so loose in the bore. It's going be bad rings, bad sleeve or just flat wore out. In any case, that still needs to be addressed before you call it fixed. If you correct a valve issue but don't get the piston to bore sloppiness resolved, you'll be back into the engine before long.

And YES, they certainly are worth rebuilding.

You CAN rebuild that engine. You need to use a good quality machine shop to do the critical machine stuff and buy the right quality parts. I didn't thing I could rebuild a VW Beetle motor when I first looked at one, but I got through it and eventually ended up building them for other people.

Get a good manual (available here at this site) if you don't already have one and that's half the work (getting the information together). Good luck and let us know what you find and decide to do about it.

Your test results looks extremely close to my 52 workhorse when I first got it. It turned out being a mis-ground valve seat (was ground at an incorrect angle). I ground it flush where the valve seated correctly and now it runs like a champ.

Good luck,
Dan

My guess is you have a valve problem on # 3. Turn engine over till you are on TDC # 3 both valves closed. Pour a little fluid (gas, mineral sprites a thin type fluid) around valve tops and see iffin they leak. By yer compression reading they shoud leak bad. Try it on all off the valves to git a fell of what you should see. A compression test is the first step once you found the low cylinder befor you removed the head you should have tried to figure out were the big leak wuz, rings are valves. You are still in the dark somewhat and know the hole were the problem is
