Well this is it. I had my 8 running like a champ for about 4 months after I redid all the wiring and put 12 volts in. I have a hill at my house that I have been mowing for 2 years with this tractor and have not had any problems with the hill. Well,I took it down the hill one day in 2nd and all went to pot from there. Now I have to Pull it with my wifes Jeep to start it and if its Cold then it will run just fine for about 3 to 5 min. after that it runs rough and I have to feather the choke to keep it going. Some times it will smooth out for a short bit.It has a new coil and plugs, roater cap and roator. Plug wires are new from when I redid the wiring. I cleaned the screen that is in the gas line going into the Carb. There is good gas flow from the tank. Any help with this would be much appreciated.

OK well with two of you saing that it still could be the carb I will dig into it on Mon. I will let you know how it goes. With the screen not too bad when I checked were the gas line comes into the carb I was starting to rule out the Carb. I love this old girl I was asked by the old timer that I got the 8 from if I was scaired to work on things and I said NO hehe I did not think that it would get into my blood. My wifes Dad works on old cars and I think I have found my thing. My wife will not let me get another one till I keep this one running for a year with out a glitch. From what I have read I am never going to get another hehe I would like to get a ford Powerhores too. but for now lets see what we can do with the old redbelly. Thanks
Rod

Carburetor has foreign matter in it that doesn't belong there. Pointing it down hill may have caused a small puddle of water that was just sittig there in the sump{that is supposed to drained from time to time} to migrate to the high speed orifice area.

Cleaning the N carburator. The problem may well be the presence of moisture in one or more places in the fuel system. Water likes to go to the bottom of gasoline and the bottom of the system is at the bottom of the carburetor. The best thing to do is to take the carburator off and take it inside the shop and then take it apart. Remove the big high speed jet needle from the front of the carburetor first or it will be damaged when the carburetor is split. It will be facing down and angled to the back slightly.

There are three screens in the N fuel system and all of them must be open so fuel can flow. The first is in the tank on the top of the fuel valve/bowl. The second is in the top of the fuel bowl. The third is in the elbow that attaches to the carburetor where the fuel enters the carburetor. To see if you have enough fuel flow to allow the engine to operate right you should open the carburetor drain plug that is the small 1/8” pipe plug in the bottom of the carburetor bowl and allow it to drain for at least a full minute. There should still be a good flow of fuel after the one minute is up and not just diminish to a drip.

Be very cautious about the gas in a closed area and have no source of ignition so you don't set yourself of fire with the gas. The bottom of the bowl needs to be cleaned good and then blown out with compressed air. If you have the right tool to do it you need to remove the high speed fuel nozzle. That is the brass thing in the venturi (throat) of the intake that is pointing down and toward the front. It takes a long socket of the right size and don't try to get it out with a pair of pliers or you may get it so it can never be removed and cleaned. There will be several little holes in the jet that come into the bore from the sides and they all need to be opened with a needle of the right size. The best thing to use is a welders tip cleaner as it will have an assortment of different sizes and one will fit. Always use the biggest one you can get to go into the hole,

Be absolutely sure that the orifice in the bottom of the carburetor just below the point that the high speed needles sits when assembled is absolutely clean and free of all foreign material.

Do you have a good gas flow from the drain plug at the bottom of the carb?? If you don't then you may have a clogged float valve.
