Help! I am working on the girlfriends 9N. It has had the 12 volt conversion done to it.

Symptons:

Wont start without being jump started.

Dies a short time after the jumper cables are removed. The battery is only about 4 months old.

I did a tune up on it back in March (points, plugs, wires, oil change, air and oil filters), and it ran great. But I am not 100% sure it just wasnt running off the battery the entire time.

Thanks for any help. The back field is getting tall.

First off pull the battery and charge/have it load checked. Then check out the chargeing system. If its a one wire alternator you have to rev them up real high to get them to charge. If its a 3 wire check all the wires and make sure they are all ok/hooked up.

I agree.. not charging.

Could be the alternator.. or bad wireing.

Pretty simple to diagnose it, get a multi-meter and connect to the battery terminals. Start engine up and see what voltage you have when running, both at idle and revved up. It will be apparent if you are charging or not. If you are charging, then its the battery. If you are NOT charging then its your volatage regulator or alternator. You can figure out which by doing further voltage tests on the contacts on those parts. Hard for me to be real specific because I have no idea what kind of a 12 volt setup you have on your tractor.
