A friend of mine and i are trying to get his 49 8N started. He ran it all last year, but this spring it would turn over but not start. It is a 6 volt system.
This whats been done so far,

1. He drained the tank and filled with new gas. The fuel is reaching the carb.
2. He was not getting fire from the coil so he replaced the coil, distributor cap, points, condenser, all the wiring, rotor, plugs, plug wires. The distributor was removed from the engine. We are getting fire at the plugs.
3. Had someone rebuilt the carburator.

The engine will still not fire. We are thinking possibly the timing may be off, although according to the position of the rotor at top dead center, it is close. Should'nt it fire if the timing was fairly close?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. It's getting close to bush-hoggin time and he really misses using his tractor.

I know the feeling.

Try to pull start it. It seems these 8N's have a problem with correct spark coming from the front distributor. Good luck, will watch for your post to keep us abreast.

if you have fuel in the cylinders, ignition at the plugs at approximately the right time, and a modicrum of compression the thing will run. so----

is the fire at the plugs nice and blue white? if it is shabby and orange you need to look at ignition.

is fuel getting past the needle and seat? try some starting fluid in the intake. if it fires you need to work on the carb.

is there around 90 psi of compression? if not get a for sale sign or start looking for stuck valves or rings

find top dead center of the cylinder nearest the radiator [feel for compression with the plug out] and see if the distributor rotor points to the plug wire headed that direction. even if the thing is way out of time you ought to hear some evidence of combustion.

trouble shoot it and post what you find

your mileage may vary
