I have a front mount 8N, converted to 12 V....was mowing in a swale, and when crossed from left side to right side the right front wheel came up so high that the top of the spindle (or some nearby piece) crunched into the blades of "fan" behind the alternator pulley...they were bent all to heck...eating into fan belt...I bent them back into shape and they seemed to have OK clearance...but when started back up, one blade caught the top bracket and broke off....now, as to remedying the cause of the problem, I read in the archives that a shorter belt will help by raising the alternator up...comments??...as far as fixing the "fan", can this be replaced, or do I need to get a new delco 10SI??? It runs as is, but should this be fixed?? Thanks in advance folks!

I had the same problem on my recent addition 2N, converted to 12v. Happened while plowing snow. After the 3rd BZZZZZ sound I figured out what was causing it- axle riding high on one side in snowbank. Thought about pullys, brackets, fanbelts. (Sigh). Then I noticed that the axles were set in close- closer than my 8N. Oh boy! Set 'um out wider (to track with the rear wheels--better stance, anyway) and eliminated the problem. Noticed that the axle width (judging from the original paint inside-- the only old paint on the tractor) hadn't been changed in 60 years. BTW, those old bolts responded very well- good hardware in those days.

I had the same problem several years ago when I went to an alternator. Teeth on alt. fan keep breaking off. I had to re-manufacture my alt. brackets to lift the alt. higher and had to put on a 1" longer belt to compensate for the longer brackets. I had no further problems. I have recently replaced the worn out bushing on my king pin and that too might have been part of the problem...Ron

Depending on the electrical load on your N.. it may not even be an issue.

My 2n has NO fan.. and works fine.

Alternator charges at about 20 a after startup and tapers off to about 10a pretty quick.. within 3-5 minutes it is at a couple amps...

No real heat problems unless you are pulling alot of juice.

Now.. one other thing to look at. Is your alternator hund way to low.. or is your axle traveling way to high ( or both ).

When the kingpin wears.. the axle travel will exagerate.. you can beef up the axle stops to prevent this. Usually you find out the axle travels too much when it breaks off a nipple on
the front mount distribuitor..

There are a couple of variations of fans on the 10SI's, all easily replaced.

If you have an impact wrench, that will make the quickest work of taking the pulley and fan off. Take the damaged fan along to a local automotive electrical shop or auto wrecking yard, and they will be able to fix you right up!
