Looking for an internet site that offers repair information (free) on automobiles and trucks (specifically Lexus) and I am totally inundated by the 1/2 million plus sites that offer parts, service, Q and A, but so far, Ive found nothing free. My wife's Lexus is in need of repair and the Lexus dealer wants my first born as payment. Anyone know of any free sites that I can refer to from time to time. I am looking at buying a Haynes Repair manual, but haven't yet. That will be my next purchase...Ron

Thanks for all the posts. I went to the library, but they had nothing for my particular year (1992). I almost ordered a Haynes manual from NAPA, but I didn't want to return tomorrow to pick it up. Guess I'll do that anyway. I bought a week's worth of Mitchell Auto Service on line @7.95/week and that worked very well. I only wish I had bought the full year of service for $29. Anyway, for the time being, everything is repaired and running like a well oiled quartz watch. I will try to find the site for the moonlite mechanic...Ron

I happened onto a site once called "moonlight mechanic" that was very similar to this board and was free. I no longer have the website though and can't find it again. If you can find it in Google or something I'm pretty sure it'll be what you need.

Try your city library. Our library has a lot of shop manuals on CDROM. If I remember right, Mitchell is the name of a good manual with much better info (more detailed and specific) than anything Haynes ever published. CDROM is great because you can print out the sections you need. Our library doesn"t even charge for the printer.
The Mitchell manual is pretty dang easy to use too.

One of the curses of modern cars is the complexity of them means most of us "shade tree" mechanics are totally lost under the hood. There are so many special tools and equiptment needed to diagnose and repair them. As a former Snap-on dealer, I know about the tools.
You can buy a shop manual for the car and see if the repair is something you can do, or take it to an independent shop that specializes in Asian cars. Remember, the parts and service for any car will be inline with the original purchase price. In other words, if the car was expensive new, it will cost more to service and repair, all things being equal.

Sorry, I cannot help with the site, but I have been in those shoes. I never really found any good sites like you describe although I know there are some related to specific models such as the diesel trucks. My son had a Honda (my first and last experience with a Honda I might add) and the transmission failed miseraby at 60,000 miles and dealer wanted $4500 to install a rebuilt. Luckily we found a used tranny, but it still set him back about $1,000 with installation. He sold the car and bought a Cavalier. The guy working on it said his wife liked to drive Toyotas, but he absolutely never let her car go out of warranty and he repairs cars for a living. I know the "big three" are expensive to repair as well, but my experience has been that Honda, Toyota, etc are worse, and sometimes it is difficult to find anyone except the dealer to work on them other than minor stuff like brakes, etc. Good luck - hopefully someone will chime in and help out with a site.
