Jubilee engine questions of the experts.........

Guys -

Working on my dad's Jubilee by remote control again (he's 4 hours north of here). Dad reports:

Engine has been smoking gray smoke for the last year or to. Not blue like oil, nor does it smell like oil. Not black like a rich carburator setting, just gray.

Engine coolant system is tight. Uses a quart of oil thru the summer (10w-30). Sent him my compression tester and the results are, front cylinder to back, dry: 94, 96, 95, 94 lbs, wet: 100, 102, 100, 104. From what I've read, thats pretty decent. Oil pressure is 60-70 lbs at high throttle.

Tractor is mostly a toy, running a half mile to the neighbors, and dragging the grand kids around the woods in a trailer is most of its retirement these days. Doesn't see much heavy work anymore. Probaly sees 20-40 hours per year on it. He's owned it for about 20 years.

Have heard from some that old tractors need to be worked hard once in a while to keep them limber. Any truth to this?

Carburator is set fine. Gas is fresh. Is there a thermostat in this tractor? Have never seen the coolant temperature gauge much above "cold" in nearly for ever.

Any words of wisdom here as to why it is smoking?

I agree with Dan, Jim and SouNdguy. Put a thermostat in it, get rid of the 10W30 oil, and experiment with the mixture screw as it might be rich. Finally, check the timing if you think the "knocking sound" is spark knock.

I would agree with Jim UT that your thermostat is not allowing the engine to get up to operating temperature to allow burn off of condensation produced by a cold running engine. Also if the valve cover gasket is leaking and oil is getting onto the exhaust manifold you will see smoke coming from under the hood. Check the breather on the right side of the valve cover and make sure it is not clogged with debris. HTH..... ..... .BG

Try 20w50 or 30w And perhaps back off 1/8 turn on the main jet and see where that gets him.. DO check on the thermostat.

There should be a thermostat but it's possible someone removed it in the past. That's what I found on my 850 (same basic engine...more cubes). It never got into the "normal" range on the temp gauge. I finally decided either the t-stat was missing or it was stuck open. So I bought a new one and opened it up. Sure enough, no t-stat. Now there's one installed and it gets up to operating temp in about 5 minutes of running. Much better.

The t-stat installs under the hose housing on the top front of the block, not in the hose like the 8N. Remove the hose and remove two bolts and you have it. You might need to remove 20 years of greasy gunk to see the bolts (I did).

My grandfather relayed the wrong information. There is some grey smoke that appears when you rev the engine up. But a lot of the time, there is light blue smoke appearing. After the engine is shut off, some smoke rolls out of the vents on the right side of the engine. Also, when the engine is going into 4th and has some load on the engine, it sometimes makes a knocking sound and blue smoke comes out of the left side of the engine. Thanks!

Cal sounds like he's getting kinda attatched to that Ford product, even though he bleeds RED (sometimes dark gray) when cut.

Sounds like some oil is getting past the worn rings. Bump the oil up to straight 40w or 20w-50 and it will help for quite awhile based on the limited and light usage he is giving it.

Good luck,
Dan

I agree with Dan. It sounds like it just needs run some and warmed up good.

Grey smoke when the throttle is snapped from idle to full throttle is semi normal. I see it on my freshly rebuilt NAA engine when it idles for awhile. White smoke would indicate water in the combustion chamber but could be just steam from condensation because your compression numbers do not indicate a blown head gasket. If you are not loosing water in the radiator, or have oil floating on top of your radiator water, I would say it just needs to be run hard to heat up enough to burn off any condensation built up in a warm engine run infrequently.

HTH,
Dan
