46 2N with newly rebuilt 8N engine, front mount, 6 volt, new wiring. Runs for approx 30 seconds and dies. Replaced ballast resistor at Dell's suggestion, as well as trying a new coil. Same problem. When engine quits, I no longer get spark. The afternarket coil I bought is not exactly the same size as the old one. It's loose when I close the bale. I can't tell if it's making contact with the distributor. I put the old coil back in and still no spark after waiting about 1 hour. Is it possible for the coil to go bad in only 30 seconds? Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Rick

Rick..... ..I can't remember if you replaced your ignition switch, bypass it with a jumper wire. Once, I had a bad brand new ignition switch. Check it.

Loose coil, did your remember to re-install the p/n 9N-12140-B gasket?

Sometimes the ignition point "slip" because the screw doesn't hold. Check th epoint gap. Check also the condenser terminal that it is not shorting out. Do you still have your old condenser? swap 'em..... ..Dell

Dell, I took the distributor off and checked the points when I was replacing the coil. They checked out fine (.015). Regapped the plugs, tried both coils(yes I did forget the gasket, thanks). Still no spark. I'm gettin 8 volts at the coil, does that sound right? I didn't have any grey hairs when I started this, now I'm being called Frosty!

Rick..... If'n ya gotts 8 volts at the coil and ya gotts a 6 volt system, stand back, we're gonna makka lotts of money. (grin)

HOWSOMEVER...if'n you really have a 12 volt conversion and a 6 volt coil, then yes, 8 volts on a 6 volt coil is TOO MUCH.

And yes, 12 volts on a 6 volt ignition coil will cause it to stop running after about a couple of minutes.

So Rick, what do you really have? OEM 6 volt system or a 12 volt conversion that you neglected to mention?..... ..Dell

Dell, I'm positive it's a 6 volt EOM. Maybe it's a faulty meter, I've had it since high school(20 yrs plus). Anyways, it's late now, I'll check it again tomorrow and update you. It just occurred to me that maybe when I bought the battery, my parts man sold me an 8 volt one. I'll check that in the morning too.
