The oil pressure in our 8N is a bit low. Even with heavier weight oil, it drops down to about 12-15 lbs. when running hot and hard. Normal running pressure is about 18-20 lbs.

This site has a rebuild kit for $40, but I'm wondering how difficult pulling and rebuilding the pump actually is. I know the front axle has to come off (yikes!) and there are some tolerances involved. The fo-4 manual has surprisingly little on the procedure.

I've rebuilt the carb and distibutor with relatively little trouble, however I am not a mechanic by any means. Should I leave this to an expert, or is it a pretty simple fix??!

Worn bearings cause pressure drop when hot.Your pressure is not that low. I would leave it alone.The flathead oil pump is one of the reasons I favor the later OHV engine.

If you decide to "rebuild" it, be aware that late 8N's have wider pump gears than earlier 8N's and the earlier series, and be sure to get a kit with the correct width gears for your pump.

If the bushings have worn much, the housing will be worn by the gears cutting into it, or if any debris has gone through the pump, the housing will be grooved. The kit, with new bushings, shaft and gears will improve the pump, but cannot make up for the housing wear, so likely it will never be as good as a new pump.

As the other poster stated, correct installation of a new pump requires the block to be align-bored, since the pump body is also the front main bearing cap.

Bill,
The oil pump housing is built into #1 main bearing cap, if you buy the new cap/housing you will have to have it align bored, that means while your doing that you might as well rebuild it. Sounds like you have bearing clearance issues. The oil pump don"t really make the pressure, it is the tolerance between the crank and bearings that make most of the psi. The oil pressure you have is fine, not great but it should run for many hrs to come. These engines would be fine at almost 0 psi (hot at idle) and 8-10 psi at full rpms. I rebuilt the oil pump on one of My 8N"s and did not see one bit of difference. If she"s still got oil psi and does the job you ask run"r. Or spend $1000 or so to rebuild it. Or you might try a new oil psi relief spring and poppet, that is cheaper and easier to do.

the pump itself is not hard at all, but if it has any wear inside your looking at more $$$
in parts than its worth, and for another $30. you can pull&replace faster, but that depends on if ya got the $$$ to go with the new pump, and your time rebuilding the old one is worth something, you can figure it'll take ya 1-1/2 hrs to gett'r apart to see the pump then about an hr. to rebuild'r then 2 hrs. to gett'r back together, cuz you'll find stuff that ya wanna redo before it goes back together....
i work on these old things all day and every customer of mine says "WHILE YER IN THERE CHECK THIS OUT, AND WHATS THAT GONNA COST ME TO FIXER RIGHT" and at that point the est. 2 hr. reassembly goes to alotta extra time and extra $$$
