Hello,

I am new to this forum and to the use and purchasing of tractors. I recently bought 7 acres and built our home. We are going to be mowing about 5 open acres. I was planning on buying a pull behind mower to use with my quad, but after borrowing my dad's and seeing how fast the feild grows, I now have talked my wife into getting a small tractor with a bush hog and/or finish mower to do this job. I am looking at three tractors right now and need a little help.

All three prices include a bush hog...

The tractors are

Ford 8N....Looks to be in fairly good shape. But I seem to see oil around the motor when veiwed from the right side of the tractor. Asking $2300

Farmall A...Decent shape, but I know that he sheetmetal needs paint, leaks a little oil from the rear of the tractor, doesn't want to start right now. THis was my Grandpa's tractor (not the original owner)and my uncle who owns it no says that it has sat for a while and needs a battery and maybe a started(he will replace and get it running again) Price is $1800 (Uncle says that is reletive price, he would ask more if he was selling it to someone else)

Co-Op E3...I haven't seen this one, but it is a friend of my uncle's and he says it is in good working order. Price is $1500

I know that the Ford and the E3 have 3 Point Hitches and the Model A does not... Is this a big deal for bush hogging?

I also know that the E3 has a live PTO, Didn't ask about the 8N or the A...

I don't need a collector, I just want one that will do my light duty jobs of mowing the 5 acres/ Blading and Grading the driveway. Are these prices fair? What about parts/service...which would be easiest to work on or get someone to work on?

ANy help you all can give me would be great! You can email me or respond in th forum...

Thanks again...

3 Point Hitch much better to brush hog with, pull behind is a pain going around corners!

I would vote for the 8N because the three point hitch is so useful for so many jobs. The oil you see on the right side of the engine is probably either a leaky valve cover gasket or governor gasket. Neither one of these things is a big deal to fix. Parts are readily available for the 8N. If your land is already cleared, get a 6 foot finish mower instead of a bushhog. The quality of cut is so much nicer.

Not a bad price on the E3.. as others pointed out.. harder to get parts for.. in fact.. not a bad price on the A.. course.. without 3pt lift.. blading the driveway is almost out... and that rear end leak may get you into an extensive repair.. especially if the tractor is 'not-running'.

Tood bad you can't find a hundred series tractor...

I think I'd go for the e3 for price if it is in good condition.. or the 8n

Jeff,

8N will do you well for pulling a small bush hog around. Having a 3 point hitch is a big deal. The little A is nice, but not as usefull as the 8N with a 3 point. Lots of parts are available for this tractor. Lots of help is available if it ever needs fixing.

That being said, the Co-Op E3 is a good tractor as well. Very strong. Parts are probably not as available as for the 8N. If you ever want to pull much more than a brush hog, the E3 is the way to go.

Definitely the 8n.
Easy to get parts for and work on.
Great tractor for what you want to do.
I use mine for mowing our 3 acres and it is great.
I don't miss the live pto and live lift at all.
Go with the 8n.

Jeff,
If I had the opportunity to put a tractor into the third generation of the family, I'd ride horseback through Coventry in traditional uniform to get it. Takes a bit to get that mindset, but it happens.
I believe the Co-op has more power, but parts and/or service are limited. The 8N is probably the best for easy maintenance and parts availability followed not far behind by the Farmall.
If ya don't want a hobby and it's gonna be just a lawnmower, pick between the 8N and the Farmall by which seems to have the best engine.
Russ
