I was just in the process of cleaning my '49 8N M-S TSX series carb, ala the article in the archives. My question is about the "Air Horn Drain" as shown in Figure FO49, Page 38 of the I&T manual. Is this supposed to be solid, or should it be an open hole. I have what appears to be a "plug" in it, but it has a hole all the way through it so that there is an air passage into the carb chamber.

Any info would be appreciated.

Rick

I would replace the packing in the drain hole with something that will let the gas drip out. If you have a float valve that sticks open, this will help prevent filling your air intake, and possibly your engine, with gas.

Rick:
This weekend I had the very same experience. I was rebuilding my '49 8N carb (TSX 33) and noticed the hole in the bottom. While cleaning the carb I did not realize there was felt in the hole (it looked like carb crud) so I cleaned it all out. The kit from New Holland doesn't come with instructions and all the illustrations and text I have found seem to ignore this port. And the kit did not have new felt. So far the responses to your post do not give a solution. Does fuel drip from this hole? Does anyone know if I should plug the hole, or is it some kind of vent? If I tap it and plug it, do I just need to drain it out once in a while?

Rick..... .your carb airhorn drain should have a "felt pad" in it. It will let the gas drain but block any unfiltered air. Sometimes the carb kits don't have it, sometimes they get unintentially thrown away..... .Dell

"felt pad"...wow, I thought it was sintered bronze or sintered iron. Never would have guessed felt. Never saw a felt in the kits for it either. Seems to hold up in the carb cleaner bath and allows gas to pass, so I guess I'll leave mine alone.

Mine has the sintered bronze plug in the bottom. Unfortunately, it does not let anything out! I tried cleaning it with lacquer thinner, alcohol, paint remover, and don't remember what else. I keep the tank shutoff closed when not using the tractor to avoid problems.
