Radiator cap

The radiator cap on my 9N is a generic style. The spring/washer/post is too short to sit on the inside collar, so at the slightest increase in pressure (I think) coolant starts spraying out. Am I correct in thinking that a great deal of pressure should be needed to push the spring up to expose the drain plug? I lose about a quart of coolant in an hour's work.

9N, you said 9N... unpressurized system, wrong cap, fill only to cover core, not to top, system will blow out excess like old Model T ford normally. Might wanna get correct cap, but it won't change anything except appearance.

Ramrod - NAA guy, guessing on the 9N...

Greenhorn..... ...heres where you gitt to be a "certified shadetree mechanic". Iff'n yer cap is loose fitting, find a LARGE WASHER that will just barely fit inside the mouth of yer radiator neck. That will shim up yer spring loaded pressure relief valve so you have a secure seal. Simple, eh?..... ...Dell

I am filling the radiator to the brim. Just to the top of the core, huh?

Greenhorn..... ....as you should know, water expands when it gitts HOT. Excess water gotta go summplace. Out the overflow tube. Right? Once the final volume of water is established, NO NEED to re-fill yer radiator every morning, just because it looks low, 'cuz guess what? It'll just expand it out the overflow tube again. As long as yer radiator core tubes are covered, yer good to go. Simple, eh?..... ..Dell

The early N's.....I can't remember the year....had a non-pressurized system. All the rest used a 4 lb cap. If its overheating, chances are you overfilled it. Just add enough coolant to cover the core; do not fill the tank up. Also, check for debris in the radiator or a slipping fan belt.

According to Peterson & Beemer's "Originality Guide" the 9N cooling system was un-pressureized and became "pressurized" with the WW2 change over to 2N production in 1942. The 9N's un-pressureized radiator cap will NOT FIT the 2N's pressurized radiator neck; nor will the 2N's pressurized radiator cap fit the 9N's un-pressurized radiator neck. They're just plain different method of capturing the cap (inside vs outside). Howwomevers; the pressurized 2N radiator is an "approved" retrofit to the 9N's cooling system. No other changes needed, new radiator and cap and ya upped the heating capacity of the cooling system..... ...Dell
