Can anyone tell me why on my 600-n I replaced the starter neutral switch on tranny cover and a new solinoid now it will only start with the bypass button on under side of solinoid. I also replaced the wire between neutral switch and the small terminal on starter solinoid. It all worked fine before my neutral switch went out. I am running 12 volt battery, coil and condenser with 6 volt starter, generator and regulator. This was the setup when I bought the tractor and everything worked fine except I would have to charge the battery once in awhile as the 6 volt generater will not keep up. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Robert.

Robert.. what the guys are telling you is that basically. you probably have an incorrect solenoid. Your 600 solenoid was internally hot.. and needed ground on the third terminal. if you have the most common 12v 4 terminal solenoid, it won't work.. it's a ballast bypass solenoid... is internally grounded.. and needs power on one small lug to engage.. the other small lug is designed to power the ignition coil bypassing a ballast resistor....you would at least need a 4 terminal ioslated solenoid, so that you could hook one small post up to power... and the other small post up to your oem interlocked switch.... or more preferably.. just get a correct oem 3 terminal solenoid.

Use a test lamp to check this out..

Robert..... ...well, first off, yer 12v battery DID NOT KILL yer neutral starter switch. Switches don't care what the volts are. OK? 2nd off, 12v battery didn't kill yer starter solenoid, they're really pretty bullett-proof. 3rdly, as you already know, a 6-volt genny won't charge a 12-volt battery.

I'm gonnna assume that yer roundcan sparkie coil is a real 12-volt coil 'cuz 12v on a 6v coil will kill the sparkie coil. Condenser and points don't care, 6 or 12v. 12v on a 6v starter motor will really spin that sucker, but generally doesn't kill the starter unless you constantly crank for more than 10/15-seconds inwhichcase, you'll melt the guttz of yer starter motor.

But I can't guarantee that the replacement solenoid was wired correctly, or that it is a correct replacement solenoid. But thats where I'd start looking, in the mirror..... ...respectfully, Dell

Check the solenoid wiring, that's gotta be it, the starter switch is only one wire, can't hook that up wrong. If you installed a four post soleniod, the two small terminals could be hooked up wrong, one will need power, the other will need to go to the new starter switch to get its ground. If you installed a three post solenoid, the two large terminals could be swapped, as one of them will be powering the internal coil, and the small terminal will go to the new starter switch to get its ground.

Something to look at while you wait on the experts to nail it down for you.

Ok, help us understand what model tractor you have. There are 600 series tractors, and there are N tractors..... but I've never heard of a 600-n. Is it a 4 cylinder flathead engine w/ a 4 speed transmission?
