One of the many things on my to do list is removing my head and seeing why the number 1 spark plug rotates with the vibration of the engine running. There's a little oil running down the head right at the spark plug. I've tried tightening it but it keeps spinning. I suspect the threads are shot in the head. My question is: do you guys think I can drill and put in a helicoil my self or is it critical enough to take it to a machine shop?

This seems to be my most pressing repair at the moment because I'm wondering how much power I'm losing.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Jack

Jack..... ..gonnna guess that yer talkin'bout the OHV NAA engine 'cuz the flathead N-Engine don't goot no oil in the head.

YES, you can "repair" worn sparkplug threads. I recommend "Kline-zerts" (I think I spelled it correctly). They are a "wedged" staked insert that does NOT need special thread tap of the "heli-coil" insert. I don't like heli-coils because they will "un-thread" on constantly removed screws like sparkplugs.

Consult A good engine repair shop for your options. DON'T HELI-COIL!!!!

But FIRST, I'd change yer sparkplug for NEW. Sometimes the sparkplug thread is slightly "undersized". A $2 sparkplug is better'n a $25 head-removal repair. Also do a cylinderhead sparkie-thread clean-out with a special sparkplug thread-chaser. ($5, cheap)..... ....Dell

Thanks for the input guys. I'm talking about my 8N Dell. Whatever is leaking down is blowing by the spark plug.

I will look for both or either products at my local Pep Boys and the thread chaser also.

Thanks,
Jack
