Hey Guys,
My tractor is loosing power after about 30-45 minutes of cutting grass. Runs fine when I start up. I have checked and cleaned all fuel filters (3 of them). Checked and rechecked points - still running around 0.025" gap. Plugs look a little intersting - a slight red tint on insulator and reasonable good spark plug look I guess. I am thinking coil - but then I took the coil and resistor off of my other Jubilee (which runs fine, excpet burns lots of oil and fouls plugs - another topic!) and yet still the same problem.
May be vapor lock - how can I verify that? Fuel cap is loose and flows well when cold at least.
I am almost certain that when I start him up tommorrow- he'll run good for another 30-45 and start sputtering and stuttering. I may also try new plugs, bypass on ignition switch with a jumper ? I have new wiring on a 12V conversion. Using external resistor required 12V coil and what measures to be a 1 ohm resistor. Any additional thoughts? I need to get this one running more relaiable as I am about to overhual my other Jubilee. Which I am sure will involve more board participation - been lurking for several years now.

Found the problem ...I think. Next day it did same thing. Ran great for about 30 minutes then sputtering again. Found that if I pulled choke out about 1/3rd of the way it would run great. I adjusted main carb needle out 1/4 turn and ran fine rest of the day for another 3 hours (i gotta big yard!!) Anyway - when I started JR (name of Jubilee#2 and subject of post) this morning he ran a little rough but I didn't spend much time on him...just to move him out of the way to start REBUILD Henry - Jubilee # 1!! Yea!! More later...thanks guys. Oh yeah - I did replace plugs and wires. Auotlite 437 and TISCO copper core F&T wires. Had old horse hair plug wires. LOL

Reed..... ....like Sounder sez..... ..gitta real 12v roundcan ignition coil. NAPA #IC-14SB is a good one and NO RESISTORS. Then replace yer weaksister ignition switch. All that sputtering is weak sparkies. While usually a gunked up ignition switch shows up in about 15-mins, could take as long as 30-mins.

Its really hard to vaporlock a gravity feed fuel system. While a plugged fueltank vent can cause VACUUM LOCK, iff'n yer gascap is loose, ya can't have a vacuum lock.

Only color to really be concerned with on yer sparkies is BLACK, sooty (too rich carb setting) or OILY (bad rings) or sparklin' WHITE (leaky headgasket). Normal sparkie color is usually tanish/yellowish but reddish works for me..... ...Dell, yer self-appointed sparkie-meister

I'd quit playing games on that half way 12v conversion and loose that 6v coil and dropping resistor and get a real bona-fied 12v coil.. like a NAPA IC14SB.

Do a spark test as Bob said.. the next time it fials. Also do a carb bowl drain test to see what fuel flow you can get thru the float needle.

2 suggestions...

When it heats up and gets funky, verify that it still has a good hot spark.

If you have not yet changed the condensor, give that a try.
