#1 piston 85lb, #2 68lb, #3 Sucking #4 68lb. Looks like it's going back to Mechanic what do you think.

I would check for good spark first, then probably change points and condenser anyway. If still no go, compression check next for stuck(sticking) valve(s).Backfire thru carb is either timing off or sticking valve, and since your timing is OK with the front mount, it can only be points considerably off or sticking valves.

How long did it set while you were doing the ring job? A friend of mine had an 8N that sat for about 3-4 months. When he tried to crank it finally, it would backfire like you said.

I tried to help him sort it out. First thing we found was no compression at all on one cylinder and about 30 on another. Don't understand how or why but the valves had stuck while it was sitting such a short time.

You say the firing order is right, 1,2,4,3. Check the plug wires on the distributor cap to see if it is in that order. They will act just like yours if 3 and 4 are swapped. James

Clean and gap the points, set the timing, and adjust the carb idle. Get the ignition right and then turn the carb idle in 1/4 and see what for.

Did you remove the camshaft? If so it could be out of time with the crankshaft. If not I would do a compression check, could be and most likely is stuck valves or if you shaved the head bent valves.

The only thing I removed was the oil pan. The cam and cranked remained in place. I will do a compression check and let you know.

Firing when intake valve is open, distributor in backwards, or way off.

I'm not an 8n expert, but if it's a side mount distributor, it might be a lot like my NAA, meshing with a camshaft gear and a slot in the oil pump shaft. If your camshaft gear is timed correctly to the crankshaft gear, it has to be the distributor timing, so make sure the camshaft gear is correctly timed to the crankshaft gear, then pull the distributor and rotate the rotor half way and reinstall it.

Did you rebuild the oil pump? If so, this is highly likely to be the issue.

It is a front mount and I just checked to see if it was wrong and it can only go on one way and fit correctly.

Yep, you're right, disregard all I offered, and look to the experts on front mount, although the symptoms and probable causes remain the same.
