I was reading some posts that said to adjust the mower 1 inch lower in the front than the back. I cut my 5 acres last year which cut well but bogged down in the real tall stuff. How many of you set your mower like this and does it realy help. Any other tips? Last year was the first time using a brush hog. Thanks in advance Rick.

Yes, set it up so that the rear is higher than the front. This will make quite a difference in heavy grass. One inch will not be enough if you have an inexpensive mower that has little grass clearance (shallow deck). With such mowers the rear needs to be higher not only to keep the blades above the grass in the rear but also to allow the deck to clear better. Additionally, if you are cutting only grass and weeds, keeping the blades sharp will noticably reduce the power required. To minimize the potential for tire punctures, do not cut saplings with sharp blades.

My 8N doesn"t have the power to plow through the real heavy stuff. I just pull over a little and reduce the amount being cut.

yes, no doubt about it. If the front of the deck is higher than the back, it's mowing the grass twice, and requiring significantly more horsepower.
