hello everyone. i just bought my first tractor an 8n. the numbers stamped on the engine are a star followed by 2059 and another star. there is a forged date of 7-14-47 stamped on the rear axle. on the side of the frame i have two forged numbers, 8n 4024 and G23. does anybody have an idea of what i have? is this the 2059th 8n built? the tractor runs but won't charge the battery. i was thinking of going with the 12 volt system. should i re-do the 6 volt system instead? any advice would be welcome. thanks.

It's cheaper to do some poking with a vomor test lamp and a jumper wire to find out why your genny aint gennying.. or vr is bad.. might just need to be polerized..

I don't know how to add a link, but if you Google Smiths 8N Ford you will get a great site with lots of info on casting marks & serial numbers. The serial number itself is on the left side of the block, just below the head, on a 1x4 inch flat spot behind the oil filter. The date you see is the casting date of the axle housing. As to the 12v conversion question, well, you need to ask yourself why it is neccessary. I think there are three valid reasons to convert; first, your tractor, your money. Secondly, if you want to operate 12v auxilary equipment, and lastly, you have an old engine w/ very low compression & just do not have the bucks/time/whatever to rebuild it. Other than those three reasons, you will find that a 12v conversion is generally done as a band-aid for a worn out engine. A well maintained & properly tuned N will start at below 0* on 6v. Notice I said well maintained & properly tuned. I've got 3 N's, all 6v & I have no reason to convert to 12v. Remember, these tractors are low HP, low compression engines designed to start & run off of 6v. Just keep it maintained & it will do fine. Now that I've said my piece, you will here from others as to the merits of a 12v conversion!

according to smiths the number 2059 stamped in my block says this is the 2059th 8n made. quite an old 8n. i will have to wire brush it to make sure there isn't a 1 in front of the 2059.
