If doing a rebuild and get the cylinder head planed the bare minimum to get it flat. How much could you take off and would the valves hit the head if too much milling was done?

pull your headbolts or studnuts, and spark plugs.. roll engine over slowly by hand and see if the head rocks up and down.. or also look for contact marks on underside of head.. if ya find any.. relieve them..

Thanks for replies. I dont know if head was milled before. It was warped and machine shop guy said he took off the bare minimum to make it flat again. It seems to run OK but sounds like a metallic sound in head. I just wonder if valves are barely hitting head or something. It has good compression 120 psi so figured valves must not be damaged. Have almost 25 hrs on the meter now. Thanks

Has it been planed before? I had mine planed when I did my overhaul thinking that I was doing everything according to the book. After I finished the rebuild, I started the engine with a pull. It sounded great. I left it idling and went into the barn. When I came out it, it seemed to have a knock. As it got hotter, the Knock got worse! Thought I left a bearing cap loose. Pulled pan. Caps were tight. Checked the new lifters and numerous other things. decided to do a search on the web and found this forum. Three out of four said to check the head. Took head off and found two cylinders with a shinny spot about the size of a pea on the head. Suggestions were: new head, gouging out the head over the cylinder or doubling the head gasket. I chose the gasket solution. Solved the problem and it runs great! Moral: Don"t plane unless you"re warped!

Sure you can take off too much.
I don"t know how flat it needs to be. I remember right my tbird spec is 0.005 or 0.007 inches. Anyway, it went back on with 0.002. That"s fine, it was well within spec.
I don"t know if I would mill a flathead unless the surface was damaged or has some weird high or low spots. I can check that pretty easy by lapping it with a stone. Easy enough to remove high spots and burrs that way too.
It is important to properly torque the headbolts. In order and to 25ft-lbs, then 45ft-lbs and then final torque. Then run the engine at operating temp for some minutes and torque it again. Do that right and head will pull on flat. Very bad worse case might be that you will have to go with two gaskets but then if you mill too much you end up with two gaskets that way.

My 2 cents.
